M2 shutter at 1/30th makes different sounds

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Most of the time makes a normal sound like the ball bearing is return and how i would expect. Other times it makes a funny "gear" sound. Should I be concerned? I just got it back from a full revision from Leica! before it didnt make these sounds...

Your M2 shutter should sound different at 1/30 and 1/15 compared to its sound at higher speeds. It's a lengthier sound. If it wasn't doing it before the going-over Leica gave it, it was probably not right then, and probably is right now. Your reference to something that sounds like a ball bearing seems to confirm this. There are a couple of previous threads on this with more discussion, but that's the short answer.

Here's a good thread on this:

SLOW SHUTTER SOUNDS

Hmmm, maybe I didn't ask my question clearly enough.
Yes, I am aware that the shutter makes different sounds at all the different speed settings. And that different gears are used for the slower speeds.
My problem is that *within* the shutter speed of 1/30th (and 1/15th for that matter) it gives different sounds. Maybe every 20 shots or so the ball bearing return sound is gone and I get more of a aborted gear sound. It also seems to happen more likely to happen just after I switch to 1/30th or 1/15th from another speed.

Russell, the 15th speed is the first that works with the slow speed mecanism, could be that too, but to be sure you better take it to a pro, by the way is your camera regulary used?
