MJPEG Capture w/ Virtual Dub

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have an ATI AIW Pro PCI card. I am using VirtualDub to capture. I would like to use PicVideo's MJPEG compression codec. I have two choices in VirtualDub for capture devices: 1) ATI Capture Device; and 2) Microsoft WDM Capture Driver. I am unable to use Pic Video's codec with (1). It is unsupported. I am able to use the codec with (2). However, the problem is that anything I use with (2) I can't capture for more than about a minute (no dropped frames, taxing the cpu less than 35%, small files). Using (1) to capture with works fine with the codecs available for that. It has been suggested that I try to get the codec to work with (1). However, I don't know how I can do that. According to ATI the drivers for this card are VFW. Anybody have any ideas? Help! Nobody has been able to help me. Avery Lee of VirtualDub couldn't help either. I would like to either be able to use the codec with (1) or find out the problem with the MS WDM capture driver.

I use the same codec on my ATI Raedon 64. I use the ATI MMC 7.1 w/ the directx 8.0 firewire update. It allows me to capture mjpeg just fine. What ATI software are you using? You have the latest drivers. Try the firewire update from direct x. Before I installed it, I could not capture with any program other that ATI MMC 7.1 I don't know shit about software or what that program does, but it did something to my capture card to make it work better. As for dropped frames, I have an Ultra 160 setup that still drops frames on avis.

The PICVideo MJPEG codec is bonafide VfW but to make it work fully and make it appear in video compression codecs in Windows you have to register it first. Every registration is unique, and the codec is free so there should be no problems.

I don't have the ATI Radeon or the 164, so I can't use the ATI MMC. I use the ATI video player, and yes I have the latest drivers. Would using DirectX 8.0 firewire update make a difference in my case since I am not using the ATI MMC and I don't have a firewire. Mines is just an analog card.

As far as registering PicVideo's MJPEG, would not registering it allow it to be recognized by one driver (MS WDM) but not another (ATI)?. I've been told by ATI that the ATI capture device may not recognize other codecs. Has anyone with ATI capture cards that didn't have PicVideo's codec originally in it been able to install it successfully?

Yeah, the direct x firewire update should help, it can't hurt. Also, My I got my capture hardware before the PIC Codecs, which worked fine as soon as I installed the codecs. Not registering the codecs leave watermarks on encoded and decoded videos.
