Does anybody know if these doubly density disc can be burned using a normal cd-rw writer...or are they just double sided discs..ie both sides at 650 mb would give you aproxx 1.3gb`s...anyone know ?

Never mind i got my answer...Double Density CD formats' high capacity is realized by a few simple modifications to the CD formats. To increase data density, track-pitch and minimum pit length are miniaturized to increase the data capacity from 650MB to 1.3GB. To accommodate higher physical bit density, a parameter in the error- correction scheme (CIRC) has been changed, and the address format (ATIP) has been expanded. A copy control scheme will be included in the format to meet the increasing demands for secure content protection. The remaining areas inherit the basic specifications of the conventional CD formats to make use of the existing CD infrastructure

can you still use them for writing vcds tho? double density as i took it was that the disk is like a dvd, two tracks, when the disk is full the laser readjusts to pick up the other track and then starts writing again.

if this is the way it works then are normal writers capable of doing this?

They wont work with normal writers Sony designed and built a new type of drive specific for this purpose, and the can only be played back in the same kind of drive...so they wont play in either your normal cd-rom or your dvd player...I think this technology will lose out to DVD-R even tho the disc are only a fraction of the price of a DVDR disc they can be played on other drives so it really limits there use...

ok that rules out the 1.3GB cdr then. is it possible to use the dvdr for vcds so that it plays back in my dvd player and not only a pc, or is it necessary to get a dvd writer - sorta like the new dell one thats just come on the market?

thanks
