Hooligans

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

reading an article here reckons that at least 1 in 7 football fans have at some point in their lives been involved in Football related hooliganism and offences. Have you ever been involved in some bad behaviour. (Rik and the orange stripe away kit do not count as an offence, just a travesty)

I once hit a ManUre supporter with my brolly. But I think that was a humane act.

Yes. When I was young and daft. Not proud of it and no-one got hurt, but yes I used to dabble.

threw a brick away at Luton, it had just hit me on the chest, and I was trying to give it back to its original owner

Football related 'offences' is a pretty broad term. Reckon most of us would think of agro, but would degrading remarks, having a slash in someone's front garden or generally being loud and abusive to the opposition count?

I know a lad who supports Man United and dropped an empty, plastic whisky miniature on the way to Maine Road. He got arrested and charged with breach of the peace and various other minor offences and got named and shamed as one of the City fans who were throwing missiles at Beckham....I think he is suing for libel.

You and me both Gav. How then Swift, what counts as 'related offences'? Wearing Beckham on the back of yer shirt must be one...as is wearing a used tampon inspired top :-)

No.

Although I'm not sure about Saturday ;-)

You certainly slapped a few people on saturday....but I don't suppose staggering down the stairs classes as one of swift's offences...

Been a victim thrice but never dished any out. I've always been a gentle soul and very opposed to violence - someone might get hurt - namely me.

In 1969 I was part of the Geordie exodus to the East Midlands coal fields and had to hitch-hike back to Newcastle from Mansfield for the semi and final at SJP. After the semi against Rangers I was beginning the long walk out of Toon to get to the main roads where I could hitch. I had only got as far as close to Grainger St when 4 Scotsmen came round the corner - one of them grabs me by the collar and says "Are you a United Supporter" in a strong Billy Connolly accent. Well - it would have been like Peter denying Christ wouldn't it? I wearily muttered resignedly "Yeah" although I think my answer was irrelevant as his head crashed in and bust my lip. I fell to the ground and fortunately they walked on "Guid work Duggie" said another Neanderthal.

Although there was masses of blood, luckily the damage was very superficial so I resumed my painful and tired hike home to Mansfield still elated that the Toon was in a European Cup Final. :-)

The other time was at Highbury in 1971. Terry Hibbert got United's winner and I was set upon by lots of Arsenal fans on my way out the ground. Scarf stolen, hefty kick in the back - I was very scared as I was heavily outnumbered and it seemed like a gang intent on one thing. Luckily I wasn't a bad runner!

In 1974 after the famous voided victory over Forest at SJP we were ordered to replay the tie at Goodison. we drew 0-0 and had to replay again 2 days later finally winning 1-0. This meant two train trips up from Kent for me. I recall that after one of the games - the first I think, just as I was walking into the station some scouser shoved a lighted cigarette in my face before running off. Wierd.

As I say I have never dished any out but there is one occasion when I wish I had. Some of you are veterans of that mighty day at Hillsborough in 1974, when Supermac blasted St Joe's team into the FA Cup final. As I was leaving the ground I saw a young lone dejected Burnley fan trudging sadly homewards when a bunch of brave Newcastle "fans" crossed the road to clout the kid and take his scarf. I often wish I'd gone over myself and chinned them. I think I was angry enough to have taken them all on. A blot on an otherwise perfect day.

The nearest i've come to football hooliganism was when I was punched and my s scarf nicked by a bunch of LBAB's back in the seventies. I've always been a lover ... not a fighter (As M.Jackson would say).

I must admit, I've have offended many people including many on here by my unashamed wearing of away shirts, such as the lovely Blue, Orange , and Green one of a few seasons ago.
