Do you really "not understand" the story, or do you just want to avoid actually reading it?

The story is fairly simple except for the philosophy of the method employed by Dupin in its solution. Hiding something in plain sight is yet another common detective theme pioneered by Poe, but the argument for the intuitive poetical mind being superior in this case to the most experienced and rigorous police work is the most important aspect. Sherlock Holmes seems styled after this and the Rue Morgue in particular.
