Speed targetted by Leeds United

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has once again denied that Leeds have any interest in Newcastle United's England midfielder Kieron Dyer.

After once again being linked with Dyer over the weekend Ridsdale said: "We have inquired about one Newcastle player but that player was not Kieron Dyer." Speculation in the Leeds Evening news is rife that Gary Speed is that player, but Newcastle are unlikely to sell, even if offered £4 millon for the creative playmaker.

Wayne Quinn as they are gonna sell us Ian Harte?

1. Aaron Hughes cos they still worry about Woodgate not being around.

2. Solano for European games

3. Gary Speed cos he's such an influential mifdfield player who can dominate games from midfield

4. Griffin as he's not going to get a first team game ahead of Warren, and they don't have right back cover

Hmm, I guess whoever it is will be ineligible to play for them in Europe if they've played in the Inter Toto....

Hughes and Solano seem the only possibilities, surely?

Take a look at the Jason Wilcox signing. Can't all be glamour jobs, they aren't averse to signing people who aren't spectacular but can be depended on to do a job. they have Harry Kewell to do everything else (what a talent).

According to the radio, Ridsdale actually said that he had made a big bid but didn't say it was a Newcastle player for whom he had made said bid...

As far as I understand dougal, you are only cup tied in individual competitions. IE if they signed Solano he could not play in the Inter toto.

Unless you are Spanish of course then if you have played in Europe you cannot play anywhere else ever and to cover this from management you have to feign illness.

no cup-tied means for Europe I think

any bans go across competitions anyway. Alan Thompson got sent off for Villa in the Intertoto last year and will carry a 3 match ban into on to Celtic's CL competition. Which means he may miss all their games. I think he couldn't play for them in the UEFA last year either due to being cup tied

Think is bullshit. Someone has changed what he really did say. Havent we seen this exact statement before but sligtly different?

Alan Thompson got sent off for Villa in the Intertoto last year and will carry a 3 match ban into on to Celtic's CL competition

This draws attention to the stupidity of the rules surrounding football that I have mentioned before. I've no idea what AT was sent off for in his Villa game but it's just possible his infringement saved the game for Villa (cf a Solskjaer-like hack on Rob Lee at OT). Instead of Villa being penalised for the offence (they would have had to "suffer" a free kick with all 10 remaining players behind the ball) it seems that it is another club entirely which has to bear the consequences of the offence! Now just imagine that Villa were in the CL (I know it's not easy) and were drawn to play Celtic. Villa would actually benefit from their own cheating in a prior match because Celtic would be unable to use AT against them. Extraordinary.

I would happily pay the 50 quid to have his mouth filled in with bits of scrap metal

-- Anonymous, July 24, 2001

I guess Celtic factored in the chances of that happening when they worked out how much to pay for Thompson
