remembering songs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A Village Commons : One Thread

Hi all, can ya tell it's a hot humid day and I'm inside on my computer alot?! hee hee The other day, while endlessly stripping wallpaper, I listened to the radio all day. (oldies station). It's funny how a song would come on that I hadn't heard in 20 years, and I could sing right along. Good thing I was alone, cause I sure can't sing! Music sure sticks in the old brain, huh? But not so the artists. Can anyone remember who sang the song, "Eve of destruction"? Also for fun, how about throwing out the first line of a song and see if we can guess the name? Here's an easy one....."A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music use to make me smile.........

Ooh! Ooh! Annie, I know the answer! (I NEVER could call the radio station in time when I was a teenager!) Don McLean's American Pie. Here's another first line: "Well, the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more, Cause when life looks like easy street there is danger at your door"

-- Jennifer J. Lance (jlance@nospammail.com), July 22, 2001.

Barry McGuire comes to mind as the "Eve of Distruction" singer.

-- mitch hearn (moopups1@aol.com), July 22, 2001.

Thought "EOD" was by two guys from Omaha. They never had any more hits. Can't think of their names. Barry Sadler is "Green Beret" isn't he?

-- paul (primrose@centex.net), July 22, 2001.

Mitch, you nailed it. It was Barry Mcguire. I finally found it on a website. Jennifer, I'm still thinking..............ya got me stumped! (any hints?!)

O.K., Lets play this game: Some velvet morning when I,m straight....

:In 1814 we took a little trip....

:I hear that train a commin,....

:She wore blue velvet....

: You ain,t nothin but a hound dog....

: Blue jean baby,...

: It happen on a road where the strip is wide....

: In the godivida.....

: People are strange....

: IN the morning, don,t say you love me....

: In the year 2525....

: I,m just mad about saffron....

: (chorus) you can get anything you want at ....

: Patty cake patty cake....!!

: Here I am to save the day.....

: Jonnie Yuma, was a rebel, he roamed through the west....

: A horse is a horse, of course....

: Let me tell you the tale of a tiny ship....

There a few to start with, when their all answered I will add more...

-- mitch hearn (moopups1@aol.com), July 22, 2001.

Paul,

The two guys who were one hit wonders were Zager and Evans who did "In the Year 2525" and, yes, Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler did "The Legend of the Green Berets"

-- Gary in Indiana (gk6854@aol.com), July 23, 2001.

:In 1814 we took a little trip....  along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
and we fought the bloody British in the town of New Orleans

We fired our guns and the British kept a comin'
But there weren't quite as many as there were a while ago.
Fired again and they began a runnin
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of mexico

:She wore blue velvet....Bluer than velvet were her eyes.

Elvis Presley     : You ain,t nothin but a hound dog....Cryin' all the time
You ain't never caught a rabbit, and you ain't no friend of mine

: In the godivida..... Iron Butterfly
Inna godda davida, baby, don't you know that I'll always love you
Inna godda davida, honey, don't you know that I'll always be true ...
(They were stoned out of their minds when they recorded the song, it was SUPPOSED to be called "In the Garden of Eden")

The Doors     : People are strange.... when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone.
Women seem wicked, when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange

: In the year 2525....If man is still alive ... if woman can survive, they may find ...
In the year 3535, ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, and say is in the pill you took today

In the year 4545 ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew, nobody's gonna look at you

In the year 5555 your arms hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got nothing to do, some machine's doing that for you

In the year 6565 ain't gonna need need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too from the bottom of a long glass tube, whoa-oh

In the year 7510 if God's a-comin' He oughta make it by then
Maybe He'll look around Himself and say guess it's time for the judgment day

In the year 8510 God is gonna shake His mighty head
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been, or tear it down and start again, whoa-oh

In the year 9595 I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old Earth can give, and he ain't put back nothin, whoa-oh

Now it's been ten thousand years.  Man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew.  Now man's reign is through

But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it was only yesterday

In the year 2525 if man is still alive ... If woman can survive, they may find .....

Donovan     : I,m just mad about saffron....Saffron's mad about me
I'm just a mad about saffron, she's just mad about me
They call me mellow yellow... (quite rightly) they call me mellow yellow   (quite rightly)
Electrical banana, gonna be the very next craze, Electrical banana, bound to be the very next phase.
They call me mellow yellow... (quite rightly) they call me mellow yellow   (quite rightly)

Very strange song.  Very strange indeed.

Arlo Guthrie     : you can get anything you want at ....Alice's Restaurant
you can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in, its around the back,
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
you can get anything you want at alice's restaurant.

: Patty cake patty cake....!!  Ummmm - the nursery rhyme?  (otherwise I have no clue...)
patty cake patty cake baker's man, bake me a cake as fast as you can
Roll it and pat it and mark it with a B and put it in the oven for baby and me

: Here I am to save the day.....Mighty Mouse!

: A horse is a horse, of course...
And no one can talk to a horse of course
Unless of course the horse is the famous Mr. Ed

: Let me tell you the tale of a tiny ship....
Just sit right back and I'll tell a tale, a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic isle aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin' man, the skipper brave and true.
Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour.  A three hour tour
The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed
If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost.
The ship came aground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan, the skipper too, the millionaire, and his wife.
A movie star, the Professor and MaryAnne - here on Gilligan's Isle

"In 1814" was The Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. My wife and I like his Wispering Pines too.

-- Jay Blair in N. AL (jayblair678@yahoo.com), July 23, 2001.

Don MacLaine sang "The Day the Music Died". Maybe the last name isn't speeled correctly, but that's the name anyway!

-- (somewhere@someplace.com), July 23, 2001.

11 out of 18 named so far, not bad for beginners!! Sojo, if you,de got them all I,de have proposed. I like the direction this forum is taking, light, lively, and interesting. I think my first opening song line is going to be the hardest, the hint, it was preformed by a man and a woman.

-- mitch hearn (moopups1@aol.com), July 23, 2001.

Mitch, yes the first one is hard and I don't have a clue, but I know at least one other, "I hear that train a coming, she's rolling round the bend, and I aint seen the sunshine since I don't know when." "Folsum PRison Blues" by Jonny Cash.

Jennifers song is continued like "...help me think this thru, let me know your mind, whoa oh what I want to know....is are you kind?" "Uncle Johns Band" by the Grateful Dead.

-- Mark M in NC (MagicMark85@aol.com), July 23, 2001.

Mark, thank you for getting Jennifers' song. It was driving me crazy. Guess you can tell I'm not a dead head! OK Mitch, here's 2 more....Blue jean baby-Tiny Dancer by Elton John....In the morning-Stay with me by Rod Stewart. Still thinking on one more.....

-- Annie (mistletoe@kconline.com), July 23, 2001.

Throwing out an idea here....Tom has the quote of the day on CS, which I love quotes and read everyday. Why not have a "song" thread everday, which whoever wants to, throws out one line of the song and we try to come up with the answer. ????????? What do you all think?

-- Annie (mistletoe@kconline.com), July 23, 2001.

Annie - and we'll have fun fun fun til her Daddy takes the pc awaaaaaay....

-- Sojourner (notime4@summer.spam), July 23, 2001.

Wasn't going to post, just lurk, but the songs got me. I'd say this is a forum of mostly old hippies, judging by the music we know and love. A little clarification, Don McLean's song is "American Pie", the day the music died. Now it's been murdered by Madonna. Oops, my generation gap is showing. And "The Battle of New Orleans" was sung by Johnny Horton, but written by an old Arkansas boy, Jimmy Driftwood. He also wrote "The Tennessee Stud". Love the forum, hope it stays healthy. I'll do my part to make it so.

OK. Second day hints:

It happened on the strip where the road was wide, two cool shorts setting side by side My fuel injected theory and a 413, reving up their engines and sounding real mean....

As for the hardest one the male singer opened with: Some velvet morning when I'm straight, girl I am comming to open up your gate....

I haven't heard the hardest one since about 1975, I understand that there is a legal tangle conserning release. Tune in tomorrow (same bat time, same bat channel) and the answer will be here if you all behave and clean your rooms!! Additional hint, the woman singer has a very famous hollywood type name and family....

-- mitch hearn (moopups1@aol.com), July 24, 2001.

Hey, Mark M, you got it! Love the old Dead songs! :)

Annie, sorry I drove you nuts. :)

I never could resist those folks who don't forget what it's like to be young. I still can't get the one about "the velvet morning", but I have a few for you all...

I got kicked off of Noah's Ark...

There are places I remember...

When I woke up this morning things were looking bad...

Have at it and prove that the brain cells are still working! DC

-- Debbie (dc1253@hcis.net), July 24, 2001.

Singer's gotta be Nancy Sinatra, but I haven't got a clue about the song itself. Of course, I was just a wee tot 'way back then ... >:D

-- Sojourner (notime4@summer.spam), July 24, 2001.

Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra...He wrote the "Boots" song, too. Way back there...I must have been a baby, too! %)

-- Debbie (dc1253@hcis.net), July 24, 2001.

Beetles: There are places I remember...
All my life, though some have changed.
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone, and some remain

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

In my life I love you more

-- Sojourner (notime4@summer.spam), July 24, 2001.

Great, Sojourner! I've always loved that song.

-- Debbie (dc1253@hcis.net), July 24, 2001.

How 'bout:

Who knows what games to choose...

That cigarette you're smoking ...

Meet the new boss ...

Yesterday a child came out to wonder ...

I learned the truth ...

Living here without you ...

Once upon a time there was a tavern ...

This summer I hear the drumming ...

Busted flat in Baton Rouge ...

I met him in a cell ...

All the while, I was alone ...

-- Sojourner (notime4@summer.spam), July 24, 2001.

The title to the Nancy Sinatra , Lee Hazelwood song is "Whitebird".

-- mitch hearn (moopups1@aol.com), July 25, 2001.

"Busted flat in Baton Rouge" - Janis Joplin; Me and Bobby McGee

"I met him in a cell" - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; Mr. Bojangles

-- Polly (tigger@moultrie.com), July 25, 2001.

Meet the new boss...The Who, Won't get fooled again That cigarette you're smoking...all I can think of is 3 Dog Night, Mama told me not to come.

-- Annie (mistletoe@kconline.com), July 25, 2001.

Busted flat in Baton Rogue- Me and Bobby McGee by Kris Kristofferson. Other people have sung it though.

-- Rebekah (daniel@itss.net), July 25, 2001.

I had forgotten about Kristoferson writing and singing Bobby McGee. It's almost become a signature song with Janis Joplin, although my favorite of hers is "Piece of my heart". Kinda like Willie Nelson writing and singing "Georgia on my mind", but I always associate the song with Ray Charles. ahhhhh, I love some of his old songs....

-- Annie (mistletoe@kconline.com), July 25, 2001.

Sojourner et al: I'd love to put a track of "In My Life" out on the net somewhere! I think I can do it justice! I need to write the tableture down for the Harpsicord solo, so I can play it all.

-- rick K (rick_122@hotmail.com), August 12, 2001.

Gee, rick, if you hadn't come along I'd have totally forgotten about this!  I didn't even give up the answers!

Here they are:

Who knows what games to choose...
Little to win, but nothing to lose           INCENSE AND PEPPERMINTS

That cigarette you're smoking ...   Annie got it, 3 dog night, Mama Told me not to Come

Meet the new boss ...   Yup, The Who

Yesterday a child came out to wonder ...   CIRCLE GAME
Caught a dragon fly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling at a star

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on a carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind from where we came
And go round and round and round in the circle game*

I learned the truth ... at Seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And High School girls with clear-skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired.

Living here without you ... On Second Avenue (Art Garfunkel)

Once upon a time there was a tavern ...        THOSE WERE THE DAYS
Where we used to raise a glass or two,
Remember how we laughed away the hours.
And dreamed of all the great things we could do.

Those were the days, my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day.
We lived the life we choose
    We'd fight and never loose
For we were young and sure to have our way.

    Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
    We're finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming ...
Four dead in Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash and Young)

Busted flat in Baton Rouge ...   Yup, Me and Bobby McGee

I met him in a cell ...   And that was it, Mr. Bojangles

All the while, I was alone ...
    The past was close behind
I've seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind and I just grew ....
TANGLED UP IN BLUE    (Bob Dylan)

-- Sojourner (notime4@summer.spam), August 12, 2001.

ahhhhhhhhhhh Circle game! How refreshing. Gotta get some Joni Cd's. (The records take too much electricity). Miles of Aisles.

Anybody remember Shawn Phillips? Hey Miss Flipped-out...and the one with the harp or orchestra backround.

-- rick K (rick@wrong.com), August 14, 2001.

This one has been bugging me for nearly a year! If anyone can tell me who the artist was, I'll be eternally grateful!!!

The song is from the early eighties (I know, I know!) and I thought it was called "Melody", but apparently I'm wrong because I haven't been able to find it under that title. A few lines go:

Melody danced her way right into my heart, Melody stole my heart and danced away...

I can even envision the VIDEO from this song, with a ballet dancer in what appears to be a bar, and a guy standing in the shadows watching her.

HELP!

-- Tracy Rimmer (trimmer31@hotmail.com), October 12, 2001.

Boys Brigade did the song...audiogalaxy.com carries the mp3

-- Robert Foster (robertdfoster@cogeco.ca), December 05, 2001.

Way to go with "Melody!" I've been searching the net for quite some time for that one...now here's one for you... "talk, talk, you're never gonna change, no one is impressed with you... "talk, talk, tell me where you gonna go when there's no one left, to listen to you..." thanks!
