Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna, on Sicily's east coast, is in the throes of a dramatic eruption.

Lava has already cut roads and destroyed ski lifts, and residents of three villages have been told they may have to be evacuated.

The eruption spews rocks and red-hot ash into the air

As lava pours down the slopes of Etna, the lights of Catania glitter below

The volcano's power is clearly visible to nearby residents

The lava was only 5km from Nicolisi village on Saturday

Its lowest edge is advancing at five metres per hour

Five new holes have opened in the side of the volcano
