CA: Y2K problems at Palomar

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Y2K discussion group : One Thread

Source: Private conversation with an employee
of Palomar College.

Palomar College contracted PeopleSoft to
update their computer system to get ready for
Y2K. The system was wrought with errors and
problems that continue to this day. After
spending millions overbudget to get the kinks
worked out, accounting, billing and grading
problems persist. Their computers can no longer
communicate with other colleges in the area.
A hundred teachers and other employees have
quit because of payroll problems. The college
is not collecting money from all the students
because of lost data. The staff has strict orders
not to mention these problems when asked. They
received instructions on how to respond to each
problem to hide the fact that they are in a dire
economic crisis.

Miramar College will be updating their system next.

Downloaded Palomar College's budget. This confirms
my sources statement that they are millions of dollars
overbudget trying to fix the problem.

The final budget deficit for fiscal year 2000
was $6.2m.

Just found this in their 1999 minutes.

We have experienced some problems with student
registration for Summer Session caused by the implementation of
our new PeopleSoft system. We had to switch over
to the new system now because we have a Y2K problem,
and we want to improve the service to our students,
which the new system will allow us to do. Jerry Patton
reported that we are finding “bugs” in the program.
