Cartier-Bresson Books

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

As I read the many interesting and enlightening Q&A of this forum, references are often made to Henri Cartier-Bresson. Arguably the most famous Leica photographer, HC-B has a wide following among the members of our group. I would like to know the titles of those books depicting his work that are favorites of the forum's membership, as well as biographies and other related publications. Thank you.

Hi Max,

I have several HCB books. My favorite monograph is Henri Cartier-Bresson Photogrpher reissued in 1992. You might also check out a recent book called the minds eye, Writings on Photography and Photographers, consisting mostly of his writings.

Regards, TG

I also have a couple of his books. I have to say that my favorite is "America in Passing," which is a collection of his photos from the US. Another good one is "Europeans" which has many of his classic photos.

Tete a Tete ISBN 0-500-54218-X is another good book, looking at his portraits. [With some sketch work also.]

I have 3 favorities, viz--(1) A 1947 Museum of Modern Art monograph entitled "Henri Cartier-Bresson", especially for Beaumont Newhall's introduction on 'Cartier-Bresson's Photographic Technique'; (2) "The World of Henri Cartier-Bresson", Viking Press 1968, for the 'Preface' by HC-B--the major part of which is a "reworking of ideas in my first book, 'Images a la Sauvette'"; and, (3) "Henri Cartier-Bresson and the Artless Art," by Jean-Pierre Montier, Little, Brown and Company: Bullfinch Press 1996.

The books of HC Bresson that I know are:

«A propose de Paris» with photographs taken in Paris «Europeans» with photographs taken in all European countries «America is passing» with photographs taken in USA «Tete a Tete» portraits made by HC-B «HC-B in India» with photographs taken in India. «HC-B the photographer» very big book with all his well know photographs and writings. Another big book (?!!) and finally A very small book, with only a few photographs, about his philosophy in Photography.

My personal favourites are HCB : Photographer followed by HCB : the Early Work by Peter Galassi and HCB and the Artless Art by J.P Montier. The first two books ontains much of his early photographs and I tend to agree with those who thinks that his best pictures were those made during the thirties.

How strange. No one has mentioned the seminal publication "Decisive Moment." Personally, I've never seen a copy. Has anyone else?

-- Bill Mitchell (bmitch@home.com), July 22, 2001.

Well the book's very rare and that may be the reason for it not being mentioned. Few have actually seen it. I got a glimpse of the book during the HCB exhibition at the Maison Européene de la Photographie in Paris. The book has a beautiful cover designed by Matisse and that alone makes it a collector's item.

Try this for a copy of The Decisive Moment.

The Decisive Moment Or do a search here for an original 1952 edition, which has 126 photos and will set you back about a grand for a clean copy. Bibliofind

Copies of "The Decisive Moment" are available through abe.books.com . The prices are obviously indicative of the rarity of/demand for the edition.

I don't want to buy one, but I would like to see it. (I just counted, and there are already 8 HC-B books on my shelf.)

Have you checked your local library? This summer I was browsing through the oversized photo book section at the Ann Arbor Public Library and to my pleasant surprise, there it was, "The Decisive Moment" by HCB. It had been rebound the way old library books are, but it was otherwise in decent shape. I checked it out and enjoyed it a great deal.
