Relative Says Katharine Hepburn Suffering From Minor Infection

The Associated Press Published: Jul 20, 2001

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Four-time Academy Award winner Katharine Hepburn spent a second night in a hospital for treatment of what a relative described as a minor infection. Hepburn's brother-in-law, Ellsworth Grant, said the family hoped the 94-year-old actress would be able to return home Saturday or Sunday.

"She's doing much better today," Grant said Thursday.

Hepburn's past health problems include arthritis, pneumonia and Parkinson's-like tremors.

She first sought treatment for the infection Wednesday at Middlesex Hospital's Shoreline Medical Center in Essex. The hospital released very little information about Hepburn's treatment Thursday.

"She's up and around and speaking with her physicians," Hartford Hospital spokesman James Battaglio said. "Physically she's showing improvement in her overall appearance and her spirit."

In an interview in October 1990, she told The Associated Press: "I'm what is known as gradually disintegrating. I don't fear the next world, or anything. I don't fear hell, and I don't look forward to heaven."

During her 60-year career, Hepburn was nominated for a record-tying 12 Academy Awards and won for "Morning Glory," 1933; "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," 1967; "A Lion in Winter," 1968; and "On Golden Pond," 1981.
