Aluminum Wiring

Aluminum wiring was used in new residential construction generally between 1965 and 1975. While there have been some problems with aluminum wiring, there is no need for panic. Problems arise from the connections and not the wire itself. Just remember that any devices (switches, receptacles, etc.) used with aluminum wiring MUST be approved for the application. During home additions and/or remodeling projects, problems can arise if incompatible materials are used or existing circuits are extended.

If you suspect that aluminum wiring is in your home, have your wiring system evaluated by a qualified electrician. If you have aluminum wiring, make sure that someone who thoroughly understands this type of wiring does the work.
