Local newspapers and Watergate Syndrome

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Not football but it made me laugh. There was a power cut in Consett last week and, true to form, the Consett and Stanley Advertiser has written a lengthy, dramatic, cover story about it. Anyway, one source, who didn't want to be named, is quoted as saying "The shops in Consett must have lost a lot of money during the power cut". Didn't want to be named? Has the basic freedom of speech been so eroded that you can expect a kneecapping for such a statement? Or, do journalists on local newspapers have Watergate syndrome?

Maybe he didn't want the shame of having his name in the Advertiser?;)

I can't imagine "In Shops" having a particularly huge turnover myself...

Was it the fact that the person lives in Consett and does not want such a shameful fact to be known? Or worse that they shop in Consett? Or maybe it was just that the person did not want it known that they read the Consett Advertiser. Perhaps it's a member of the Consett Mafia and further such power cuts will occur unless the traders co- operate. Some further investigation is needed by your good self Dougal.

ML, you could be right, but, then why be ashamed to be associated with the organ that carries every word that Albert Dryden ever said.. Jonno, I'll be happy to investigate Consett's very own deep throat: might be the biggest thrill of my summer...
