LEVY KIN: INVESTIGATE CONDIT BRO

By BRIAN BLOMQUIST

July 19, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - Missing intern Chandra Levy's family wants cops to find out if Rep. Gary Condit's bad-boy younger brother Darrell played any role in her disappearance, family sources said yesterday.

"We think it would be fertile ground" for investigation, a Levy family source told The Post.

"We know there's a criminal history. I'm sure [cops] are going to work that angle."

D.C. police and FBI agents probing Chandra's mysterious disappearance more than two months ago have discussed focusing on Darrell Wayne Condit, Fox News reported last night.

But talking to the ex-con - who has a lengthy rap sheet - might be hard to do because he's on the lam from the law.

The 49-year-old ne'er-do-well has eluded authorities for years.

Darrell was arrested five years ago in Florida for drunken driving, possession of marijuana, and driving with a suspended license - and since then he has violated probation and is a fugitive, Florida cops say.

He has been in and out of jail in five states, California court files show - getting hooked on speed at age 15 and sinking to heroin use, armed robbery and car theft.

It's unclear whether Darrell and Gary have a close relationship.

Rep. Condit's other brother, Burl, is a Modesto cop who was honored as the department's officer of the year for capturing a cop killer.

But D.C. police spokesman Joe Gentile said he wouldn't know where to send FBI agents to talk to Darrell.

"We don't know where in the hell he is," Gentile told The Post.

Gentile said D.C. detectives remain more interested in interviewing all of Levy's neighbors, as well as people at her D.C. health club.

In other developments:

* The FBI transferred the Levy case to the hot-shot "cold case" team that handles the toughest cases and, so far, the items tested in Condit's apartment haven't shown traces of blood or anything useful to the probe, CBS News reported.

* Talk magazine writer Lisa DePaulo, who is writing an article on Chandra, says Levy's pals described the missing intern as "determined" to convince Condit to dump his wife, Carolyn, and run off with her.

* An ABC News spokeswoman said off-air reporter Rebecca Cooper met to interview Condit on May 2 at a D.C. bar - contrary to an alibi timeline provided previously by Condit's staff that indicated the interview was on May 1, which was the day Levy disappeared.

* Condit used to drive his flight-attendant girlfriend, Anne Marie Smith, around D.C. in a red Ford Fiesta, about five years old, Smith's lawyer Jim Robinson told Fox News. Robinson said cops were unaware that Condit even had a car until Smith told them.

Here's a collection of booking photos (courtesy of Florida's Monroe County Sheriff's Office) of Darrell Wayne Condit, brother of embattled congressman Gary Condit. From 1994-96, when these pictures were taken, the politician's younger brother, a Key West resident, was regularly busted for drug and DUI offenses. And, yes, that is the worst mullet we've ever seen. (1 page)

Looks like all the drug use hasn't been to kind to Gary's younger brother. If I hadn't read that he was younger, I would have thought he'd be a lot older than the congresscritter.
