what is a "sensible player for sensible money" (©Bobby Robson 18/7/01)?

Is it a) A criticism of the board for pushing him to chase quality players he could never sign? b) A Peter Reid styled shrewd transfer dealing, ergo proof of "small time" status (Magpie's Law of chop logic). c) Craig Bellamy

A sensible buy is not knowing which club a player plays for before buying him.

PS. I thought you'd find my exemplification of Reid's shrewdness helpful.

Touché. To be fair Nunez is an international and was playing for PAOK Salonika when we signed him. £1.5 million was a sensible price, but the player was not a sensible one.

Can't help but feel what Bobby is saying hints at behind the scenes friction with the board.

Who knows what a manager's statements mean? In fairness, because Reid has shares in SAFC etc, he is likely to be peddling in the same direction as the board.

I don't like saying it but surely Reid's professional pride is worth more than the few bob he'd lose on shares going down?

What I mean is that surely he doesn't/couldn't be considering share prices with every move he wants to make as manager of the team....that'd be crap....

Dunno. I guess one that works out well. Certainly under TSM and TDO, we had few of those, tho Nobby was a good buy.

There 0 did I fix them italics, or has ML3 thrown in a wobbler??

Dunno, Gav, he is probably the most cautious manager in the PL in terms of buying which could be gutlessness or looking after his money. It could be pure cautiousness.
