28 M through the camera´s finder

I have this third version of the Elmarit 28/2.8M, and when seeing through the cameras finder focusing at close distances I miss almost a quarter of my frame, but I have the shoe finder so I solve this that way, what I want to ask is about the latest 28/2.8 and the newer 28/2, how do these lenses get into the finder, are those less obtrusive?

Response to 28 M through the camera´s finder

It seems this question/complaint is the most commonly asked M question. I think that ALL M lenses with a hood have the problem of a portion of the viewfinder (always the lower right quarter) being blocked. A big problem for a lot of people. Or is it? Not for me. The three lenses I use the most, 28/2.0, 35/1.4 and 50/1.4 all have hoods that block a portion of the view, so does my 90/2.8 with collapsable hood. Each of the hoods are vented so that you can see through the blocked portion so what you see is a thin dark line in the lower right corner of the viewfinder. This for me has never been a problem, I am not even aware of the hood's dark line when i compose a picture. The alternative is to just take the hood off which I would never recommend. So my recommendation about this is to stop obsessing over it, get used to it because that is the way the M lenses are with a hood and there is nothing that can be done about it.

My most sincere apologises for disturbing you with this repeated question, my doubts where more on the comparison obstruction of the three latest 28´s, mine doesn´t have a hole in it´s shade,(but I´m encourged to make it) and I know newer lenses are smaller, what I don´t know is if they obstruct the same % of finder or how less. On the other side I´m used to this on my leicas, but yesterday tring to compose a picture with a first plane in the lower rigth side of the frame made me turn my M4P up side down to compose with my 28/2.8 third generation, to be precise, and so my question rise. For your post I thank you.

No need to apologize, maybe I should apologize to you for my answer because you seem upset. I am confused because i gave a straight forward answer to your question so hopefully no apologies are needed from either.

The first hoods for the third version of the 28/2.8 did not have a cut-out for the viewfinder. Later ones (same part number) do have the cut-out and it would be very simple to modify yours. For an example of where to make the cut-out, go to eBay and look up a leica 28mm that matches yours and shows the newer cut-out hood. The fourth 28/2.8 and the 28/2 all have cut-outs in their hoods.

Cheers,

Thank to both of you, the idea is terrific, I just have my dudes if those cutted shades work as well as regular ones, for example my 35 lux non asph shade is vented, I can see through it from the cameras finder but the shade works all round the lens, in a 28 the hole left is an area not protected by the shade, am I rigth? Your idea is great John, I´ll go and see in ebay. Steve sorry if I seemed upset, probably I was for not explaining my self well, and the heat in this town lately turns me down, thanks again. Oh yes now that I have you both atention there is one other thing about this 28 lens that I have, it locks in three of my four bodies, but in one M4P it just doesn´t reach the lens lock, so I can´t use it in that lens, do you know of a reason this maybe happening. Thanks again fellows

Roberto: I'm not sure which version of the 28mm I have (327xxxx). The shade does occupy a larger portion of the frame than with any other lens I have. When working exclusively with my M cameras it doesn't bother me. Long experience (40+ years has taught my brain to compensate for it. I just move the camera enough to see what's in the lower right and then recompose. But if I've been working with the Nikon or the R4 recently, and then back to the M6, then I feel handicapped by the obstructed finder area.

I agree with you, I also have reservations about cutting away part of the hood. The cut away area would be in the upper left part of the hood where stray light can too easily enter. I'd rather live with the finder blockage.

Best regards,

Yup those pesky 28mm lens shades! You try not to fret--and you do! My c.1927 28/f2.8 Elmarit has non-vented shade. I've thought of venting it but haven't. It would ruin a classic shade and wouldn't help all that much. It is happiest on my CLE where the obstruction isn't so awful and my Bessa T. Now I have a Voitlander 28/f1.9. Tom Abrahamsson writes it is less obtrusive than the Leica 28/f2. It is happiest on my CLE and Leica M-6. Obtrusive on my Konica Hexar for some reason. My Minolta 28/f3.5 is very compact and hardly obtrusive at all but has this long real element. And its little shade is silver--ipso facto more obtrusive than black.

I think one can live with the shade. If you really need to see the (almost full frame) snap off the shade, look, shap it back on.

Suggestion---------DON'T CUT YOUR SHADES!!! It isn't as easy as it looks. Use a 28mm bright finder if you get too neurotic. No sin in that.

Response to 28 M through the camera´s finder

Alex, I don´t think I´ll cut my shade, I´ve been using this lens very shortly so my repetitive question, I don´t like how I hold my camera with this 28 external finder, but I do like my M4P´s 28 finder, it lets the posibility of focusing, just that I have to get use to miss that blocked area of the frame, still only one week with this lens on my camera, I guess I better spend more thime with it and see what happen,

I was so used to external finder with my 21, but I find it diferent, with the 21 I don´t need to focus through the cameras finder just guessing, in the 28 I prefer to check focus.

I like to spend time with a single lens until it becomes so familiar, in fifteen years using leicas this is my first 28, so I feel like starting again, wich is good. Thanks for your help.
