What a great site!!! I love stuff like this.

Everything I've ever read about rabbits suggests that comfrey can be a wonderful feed source. I've even used it myself - and it seems very true.

Want to point out that for humans, comfrey can be a problem. Taking too much can cause acute problems... It really isn't recommended for ingestion. It is mainly used in creams and poultice form for injuries, etc.

I just wanted to make that point because I know I used to think that natural stuff like this - well - if its good for the (name your animal here!) then its good for me, too. Still do, to a certain extent, just a lot more careful on checking into things these days!

Anyway - I'm off to read more on that site... Lots of stuff I never knew!!

I know Comfery is said to be good for rabbits but I had four of mine die after eating it?...who knows

Comfery is not toxic to human health when ingested. There is a constituent in it called pirrilizidine alkaloids. For these to be toxic, humans need to consume over 66,000 leaves in one sitting! The fact is when the plant is small it will contain the same amount of these alkaloids as when the plant becomes bigger. We do not have enough research to compare the rabbit anotomy and physiology to a human body. Therefore, feed comfrey to your rabbits but make sure they are the large leaves to be safe and as a human do not eat 66,ooo leaves in one sitting. Enjoy your comfery!!!

I have been raising rabbits and comfrey for almost 20 years, I have fed comfrey to rabbits, chickens, ducks, and goats and they all love it. I've taken comfrey for a variety of things, but find it works best with peppermint. The only herb I'd be really cautious of with animals is Pennyroyal, which can cause miscarriage in both humans and animals. So, if you're breeding rabbits or anything else, do not feed this to your animals.
