Filter storage options

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I'm new to Leica (M6TTL). I'm delighted with my decision to join the ranks of Leica users. Initial results have been more than satisfactory (to my eyes, anyhow). I'm looking forward to developing the "intuitive" handling skills that will make the use of this camera even more pleasurable. I've never been into big-time filter use. However, I do use 040(orange) for black & white, 81A(color daylight film w/tungsten lights), and 499(color daylight film w/fluorescent lights). This means carrying six filters (39mm & 46mm). All of the filter "wallets" that I have seen are designed to accomodate much larger diameter filters. Consequently, they're a lot bulkier than I would like. Any suggestions from this group re:compact storage solutions?

I would recommend using filter stack caps - available as B&H in the "photo" - "filters" - "other filter accesories" section. Sadly the smallest size they have is 48mm. So, i would use step up and step down rings to go to probably a 55mm stack cap (if you ever intend to buy a leica super wide, or 90/2.0, or maybe even 60 if the noct or 75/1.4 is in your future). And then buy the appropriate step up and step down rings to fit them to the stack caps. Once i started using these things (although only on 58mm and 77mm fiters where there is a direct fit) I vowed never to go back. They are such a great design, its amazing they aren't more popular.

You can get platic pill bottles from your local pharmacist in various diameters sufficient to hold filters 36mm up to 46 (maybe even 49, I never checked). Usually long enough to hold a stack of 6 or so.

Matthew and Jay - Thanks for your suggestions. I'll investigate these ideas further. While pedaling some of my Hasselblad and Contax G2 equipment at Wall Street Camera this morning, I spotted a filter case made by Tiffen. Holds six filters and fits in the outside pocket of my Domke bag. Sill bigger than I'd like, but better than most others I've seen. Considering the prices offered by the Wall Street folks, I'll be posting the 40mm Distagon, G2 outfit and few other things in the Photo.net classifieds.
