What is the difference between Miscellaneous and Uncategorized?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

I have stayed awake several nights in a row now since I realized Unk, in dividing up the old threads, has a miscellaneous category and an uncategorized category. What, pray tell is the difference? Anyone? I am about to go MAD.

'Uncategorized' is where new threads go when the poster leaves the category option at its default setting of 'Don't Know'. A thread doesn't go into the 'miscellaneous' category unless the poster specifically selects it as a category option.

Don't be MAD. Be glad.

There is no difference. Miscellaneous was put there to keep the anal retentives happy. If they don't have a way to organize everything, their entire world falls apart. Sound familiar?

The Miscellaneous category doesn't only exist for the anal retentives. It also conveys that a thread is outside the scope of the other categories. However, an Uncategorized thread could belong under Humor, Economy, Miscellaneous, or any of the other categories.

There you go again, being anal retentive David.

OK David, but then what are those categories there for, if the poster isn't using them?

What we really ought to have is:

There is no difference between the two. They are only different names for the same thing. Kind of like FutureShock and Syd Barrett, or FutureShock and Enlighten... oh, never mind.

Yeah, kinda like J and dipshit, same thing.

i think "i.rest@my.case" makes a fair comment in order to try to overcome my anal retentive personality i am making myself type this without any capitalization or punctuation i have to concede that i find it liberating
