OTSEGO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) A truck hauling thousands of eggs crashed and dumped its fragile cargo onto a family's front lawn. The neighborhood was stinky for more than a week.
''Unless you live here, you have no idea how bad it smells,'' said Shelley Fuhrman, whose yard has been smothered with wood chips, dirt and grass seed since the July 1 spill.
Police said a Schoolcraft Eggs tractor-trailer crossed the highway divide, struck two utility poles and overturned, dumping thousands of eggs onto the street and Fuhrman's property, near Kalamazoo in southwest Michigan.
''There are still eggs in the trees,'' Fuhrman told the Kalamazoo Gazette. ''All we care about is getting rid of the smell and bugs.''
A portion of the slippery highway was closed for nearly 12 hours while cleared of the mess. Cleanup crews were reluctant to dig up Fuhrman's contaminated lawn, fearing they'd damage underground utilities.
Police have charged truck driver Jose Albeo, 23, with careless driving.
A Schoolcraft Egg spokeswoman said the company had no comment.
