NM residents wait on Social Security

About 50 percent of New Mexico's Social Security recipients report that they have not received their checks, causing U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. to ask for corrective action and a review of the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Postal Service.

"While a delay in the delivery of Social Security checks may be viewed as merely an inconvenience by many here in Washington, any delay in the delivery of a Social Security check to many New Mexicans can cause a great deal of hardship," Domenici said Wednesday.

He said the people most affected are senior citizens who are on a fixed income and need the checks to make ends meet.

For Social Security recipients, a bonus check is in the mail. Most checks will be only $19, and are scheduled to be delivered Monday, Social Security Administration officials said. The extra money is to adjust for a $1 billion shortfall in payments caused by a computer glitch. The payments will go to 45 million retirement beneficiaries and six million recipients of supplemental security, the cash assistance program for the needy. Beneficiaries will automatically receive the payments and do not need to contact the Social Security Administration. For beneficiaries who have direct-deposit, the money will go into their accounts Monday.
