Mornin - thanks for the mail. There was a warning from McAfee about the virus on my computer this morning when I booted up. Honest Indians, I am ultra, ultra cautious now, but I think this came in from my friend in Canada who sends me photos of her puppies most weeks, usually in the form of a blank e mail with attachments. I got one last night, and when I clicked on the attachment it wouldn`t open. I was a bit suspicious, but not unduly so. I assume she doesn`t know that she is infected so I will mail her the details.

Anyway, I`ve just done an all file scan (did one on Tuesday and everything was OK), and it`s come up with 18 infected files.

At the bottom of the summary there is a `clean` and a `delete` button. When I hit the `clean` button, nothing is happening. I am assuming that I should get some sort of confirmation that the files have been cleaned?

Ww2/Magisr@MM is what it is telling me the virus is called, is that right?

What`s really upsetting is that the body of the e mail you sent me was the beginning of an inspirational poem someone sent me earlier this year when I lost Dad.

Any suggestions as to whether or not the virus could be jamming up my McAfee cleaning facility? (:o(

Sorry folks if anyone else is getting e mails from me which were sent without my knowledge from my bastard computer.

I'd imagine that McAfee with the latest virus definitions should have no problems with Magistr...it's a very very common virus at the minute...

I know it's a pain but you probably want to scan these mails and attachments before you open them....

It didn't cause me any hassle at all so don't worry about that, i was just concerned for you!

Checked the message source on that e mail from Canada - yep.......bucket loads of rubbish attached to the end of it.

Sorry to be a pain Gav but can I risk hitting the `delete` option? The `clean` one seems to be doing faff all?(:o(

Delete the mail? yup that should be ok....how do you know the virus cleaning hasn't worked? send me another mail at work and i'll tell you if it comes through to me....

I don`t mean delete the mail, I mean on the page where McAfee scans all the files and lists the infected ones, there are two buttons - `delete` and `clean`. The `clean` button doesn`t seem to be doing anything, and I am assuming that I would get a confirmation that the files have been cleaned.

I will delete the e mail anyway though.

Gav,
I'm not familiar with McAfee, but with Norton AV you can set the thing up to automatically scan all incoming e-mails. Could Gal do this with McAfee - preferably before she throws her illegitimate pc out of the window?

Hope I'm not poking me neb in where it's not wanted Gal, but did you actually set the scan going ?

Sounds like you've told it what to do with any infected files and it's now just sitting waiting for you to hit the scan button. The Clean and Delete buttons won't activate anything. there'll be another button labelled Start Scan or something.

When it's working properly, it should list each infected file as it detects it.

You also need to keep the .DAT file up to date, which you can do by downloading from the McAfee web site, provided you're running a legal copy of the software.

Apologies if I'm preaching to the converted.

My bro had the Magistr in the last couple of weeks - v embarrasing, it started sending emails with bits of his stand-up material that it randomly took off his hard drive. Someone emailed him a programme to get rid of it because Mcafee didn't work , and it's all better now. I can try and find out if you like...

Thanks everyone. I`ve been working on it all day trying to get it sorted. McAfee scan pulled out 20 odd files which were infected - and hopefully cleaned them - it says it has anyway.

I will report back again tomorrow if I am still having problems!(:o(
