New Quakes Hit India, 25 Injured

by FARID HOSSAIN Associated Press Writer

BHUJ, India (AP) -- A series of earthquakes shook buildings late Thursday and early Friday in the western Indian state of Gujarat, where a large quake killed at least 17,000 people two weeks ago. At least 25 people were reportedly injured in the aftershocks.

Police said the injured included 15 panicked residents who jumped from the windows of their homes in Ahmedabad, according to the Press Trust of India.

The Indian Meteorological Department said a 5.3-magnitude quake shook the Kutch district at 10:25 p.m. Thursday. The epicenter was 12.5 miles northeast of Bhachau, a town that was badly damaged in the Jan. 26 quake, said S.N. Vhattchara, deputy director general of the department.

The quake was followed by 10 aftershocks of magnitudes measuring between 3 and 4, Vhattchara said.

More than 230 aftershocks have rocked the region since the 7.7 magnitude earthquake, India's worst tremor in half a century.

Residents across Gujarat felt the quake Thursday night, and many who feared their buildings would collapse rushed into the street and spent the night outside. They jammed state telephone lines temporarily while trying to call loved ones in the aftermath.

Some 24,000 soldiers have deployed in Gujarat to search for bodies, clear debris and help hundreds of thousands of injured and homeless people. Many survivors of the quake are still sleeping outside under plastic sheets, awaiting tents and other relief supplies.

The Home Ministry says at least 17,000 people died and unofficial estimates say the toll is likely to reach 30,000, with many victims still buried under the rubble. Bhuj was among the hardest-hit towns, with whole neighborhoods flattened by the tremor.

Tremors Hit Quake Zone in India

BHUJ, India (AP) -- Tremors shook parts of India's western Gujarat state on Sunday, more than two weeks after the region's killer earthquake. There were no reported injuries.

A temblor with a magnitude of 4.7 hit the Kutch region in Gujarat at 1:01 a.m., said P.R. Vaidya of the Indian Meteorological Department, which tracks quakes. Nine smaller tremors followed.

More than 265 tremors have rocked the region since the 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Jan. 26, India's worst in half a century. The government says 17,000 people died, but unofficial estimates put the death toll as high as 30,000.

About 1,240 miles to the east, a quake with a magnitude of 4.2 rocked parts of India and neighboring Bangladesh at 6:51 a.m. Sunday, said United News of India, citing local officials. There were no injuries.
