greenspun.com : LUSENET : MATH : One Thread

Bam!

Well, I'm up stupid early. I'd like to lay around all day, but I have to find a job. Our cable has still not been fixed, and thus I am back in the kitchen at my microwave desk. I'm sure I am doing myself great biological harm, here.

What, Al Lowe too busy? She can't check in with MATH?

Did y'all read Flaya's entry? All of a sudden she's nice. She wasn't mean before, but she just didn't say thank you to the guy at the soda counter or smile at the girl who brought her shoes to try on. Stupid, stupid flaya.

As am I.

Please to look at Keli's new splash page, MATHletes. I feel that you will crack yo' asses up.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

I'm here. Allison, I meant to ask you this the other night - are you interested in nonprofit work, at all?

I'll check our Keli's page - I haven't been to her site in about a week.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Al - I assume you've put your resume up on hotjobs and monster, but thingamajob.com looks pretty good too. I know our recruiters use those 3 sites.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Allison - check out job post #32529 at opportunitynocs.org. It sounds like it would be up your alley (in terms of qualifications, at least). I think that my old boss at the Garden knows some comunications people over there, also. And the office is right at Emory.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

AB - do you take a picture of Barbie or use public art?

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Public. I found it on some vintage doll site. I'm not even sure if that's a real Barbie, as there wasn't a caption.

At least, I kind of hope it's not, for copyright and all that.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

It looks like it. If I were Keli I'd be more worried about using the word Barbie. Especially in that context. The Barbie people are brutal.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Well, I'm sure the Barbie people aren't too worried about some little ol' journal. When I was searching for the picture, I saw Barbie and all her counterparts ganked all over the place. Tribute sites to Barbie are apparently very popular.

If anyone got in trouble, though, it would be me, for using an old picture of the Barb.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

"The Barbie people are brutal."

That makes me laugh. I don't know why.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

AB - I didn't mean to worry you. I just know we're very litiguous about our copyright and have been known to send cease and desist letters to personal sites, especially if they're using our name in a defamatory light, as Keli is.

I don't think the image would be an issue as you got if off a public site. As long as it really was a public site with art up for anyone's use. I think the concern would be using the name "Barbie" and saying she smokes crack, under a picture of a Barbie doll. She couldn't argue that it was just "slang" or common usage. She clearly means THE Mattel Barbie that everyone knows.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Okay, cool. I just didn't want to be in trouble or anything--I mean, I can totally understand the reasons behind copyright, but sometimes the logistics aren't clear.

So, if you do get it from a public site, it's okay to use?

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

I think so, yes. If anyone got in trouble, it would be them for making copyrighted material available for public use.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

And really, the only thing that would happen is she would get a cease and desist letter from Mattel and she'd have to take it down.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Yeah, but it still has me worried. I just don't want to be crazy copyright-stealing girl. Maybe I'll take a picture of the naked Barbie basket in the bathroom and use that instead.

That basket, y'all? It's like Barbie porn. Kens and Barbies all naked, all the time. There's even a naked Mulan in there somewhere.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

I just noticed this. Allison, it's July baby. July. Not June.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

I wouldn't worry too much. The worst that could happen would be Mattel sending a cease-and-desist letter requesting that Keli take the pictures down. Then, y'all could just take pictures of those skanky fake Barbies that they have at Toys R Us.

And actually, pictures of the skanky fake Barbies might be even funnier.

I updated! Finally.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Oh, yes, that would be funny. Mad has a bunch of those from the Dollar Store. It's Fake Barbie! It's a dollar!

T, you did update! I wonder if Mad would like that book. If you read it when you were four, surely it's on a six-year old's comprehension level?

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

AB, I bet she'd love it. It's a chapter book, but it's an easy read, and it's a great story. It's perfect for a six-year old, especially a really smart one like Mad. It should have gotten a Newberry. It was robbed!

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

AB, speaking of closer than my peeps, Chris has his sister convinced that we're using that song for our first dance.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Ha! Man, that's funny. Is she flipping out?

I found fake Barbie pictures, y'all! Take that, Mattel! Hee.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

oh crap, I used the wrong email address and that went up top. Greenspun!

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

See, I don't even know what month it is.

I'm back at the microwave, now.

T, I'll check the OpNocs.

Ok, I must have the American Cancer job. I will apply post haste. I am totally qualified and have all that experience and then some.

Speaking of which, by the way, I do not have, as I suspected I might, cancer or any large Clyde-like structure in my body. Nor am I pregnant. You should all be very happy to hear both of those things. There was some concern for a while, but all is now well.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

What??!? (re a Clyde-like structure or cancer).

Allison, I saw that job and I thought, "That's Allison!" Except with no Napoleon. It was posted at the end of June, right? I doubt they did much for it last week. *prayers!*

Well, re problems, there was something wrong, and I didn't know what it was, but it turned out to be stress related (imagine that) and the doctor - whom I had to visit with no insurance - said everything was fine. So, all good.

I have to go to Target, and then come home and apply for every job in the world.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

You didn't COBRA your insurance?

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Did you go to Piedmont? There are some good gyns there, I hear.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Check it out silent jags.

I really, really wish I could find the New Yorker profile of Lucinda Williams. It ran a little more than a year ago, and talked a lot about both her relationship with her father and the one that had just ended.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

The new Tomato Nation is quite funny.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

It is fucking funny. I nominated her for the Legacy award, even though she's not really a journal. Sarah cracks me up.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

I think this girl is okay: http://www.geocities.com/ranchofritalovely

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

I saw that before and forgot about it. Yeah, I like Rita. Maybe too much with the cowgirl routine, but I like her.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Are you redoing the splash page, or are you going to leave it as is?

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

I am so tired. I may actually have a diet coke.

Allison, I hope the Target trip was successful, and you aren't currently stuck in traffic on Peachtree.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

My mom gave me de caf DC. It's still pretty good. But right now, I could really use one with juice.

Why is it only 4:30? WHY?

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Chris drinks decaf DC - he switched when he realized that his usual seven diet cherry cokes per day weren't the best thing for his blood pressure. Me, I don't get it.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

It tastes the same. When you crave it, or the carbonation or something. Sometimes it's just nice to taste something other than water.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Okay silent MATHletes, I'm out

Al - keep us posted on your search.
