Young Akbash/Pyr Livestock Guardian Dog free in NE TX

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have a 6 1/2 month old male 3/4 Akbash, 1/4 Great Pyr dog that we need to find a home for. He is from working stock--we got him from a man who has over 200 goats and raises his dogs with the goats. This is a beautiful dog in looks and temperament; very laid back; very sweet personality; does *not* bark all night but only when he hears something (coyotes, other dogs barking). He has established himself as alpha dog in relation to our other dog, cat, and goats (barks at them when they get too interested in his food dish), but lets my 3 year old son pick up his full food dish and carry it away. I love this dog but we have overextended ourselves and gotten too many animals before we built proper fencing. I can't keep my goats contained with the makeshift fence I built and this pup is having to live in a too small pen. The responsible thing is for us to let him go and get another one when we have things ready.

I have pictures I can email to anyone interested. His name is Frodo, and sometimes Ruff (we couldn't settle on a name). He is a wonderful dog and I'll be happy to take him back if someone wants him and then later changes their minds (in other words don't shoot him if he doesn't work out--he's too sweet) Thanks

I'm sorry not to have updated this thread earlier. Thanks so much to all who offered to give him a good home! We are keeping our dog, whose name by now is Arlo, and I have enclosed 1/2 acre for him with an electric fence wire 8" from the ground so he can't dig out. I am gradually getting him used to being with the goats--he's very friendly with them but wants to play tag and runs them ragged, so I have to supervise for now. He's just a 100+ pound adolescent dog and not ready to be a responsible guardian yet, but he's great at alerting us; he has a special bark that means "stray dog," versus just UPS man! And he barked at two bald eagles that flew over last week!! First time he's ever barked at a bird. I was very proud of him.

Thanks again,
