Horror--Oh the Horror!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Some of you have mentioned that you easily carry lenses in your pockets by gluing two end caps back to back and putting a favorite pair of lenses in the caps. Keeps them together and you have fewer caps rattling around in your pocket.

Being a natural born cheapskate, and having some experience with Konica parts and service in New Jersey I figured I'd give them a call and see if they had any Konica M lens caps. Sure enough, they do and they are a veritable bargain. (Oh horror of horrors!!!!--a Konica cap on a Leica lens!!) Now you may appropriately wail, beat your breasts, and gnash your teeth.

For the infidel here's the deal. Call Kathy Nick at Konica Service. 1-800-422-1788. End caps $3.70each. Konica Hexar RF Body caps go for a mere $1.79. They work fine on the M6. Shipping is $4.00. And they take VISA over the phone.

When Dan Goldberg recently adjusted my M6 he returned it without my body cap. (He immediately sent me one when I pointed out the mishap) I purchased a second body cap for the M6 for $20. When I lost my 35mm front cap I gave Don Chatterton $35 for a small peice of plastic with Leica embossed on it.

When I bought my M6 it came wrapped in a clear plastic bag. I'll guess the bag must be worth more than $75. And Avagadro doesn't have enough number's to cover the price of that wonderful plastic box that comes surrounding the M6 body.

Caps are elusive critters and have an amazing capacity to decamp the scene. And if you glue two Konica caps back to back only you and your clergy will know. And there is something satisfyingly tacky about draping Konica merchandise on the beloved Leica torso.

Don't DO that!!! You freaked me out. Here I was sure that the title of your post meant that you (trembling) dropped and smashed one of your Leica lenses onto the ground or something!!!!! *whew*

From now on, by decree, the word "Horror" will not be used in the titles of posts unless, of course, *ahem* .... you DO suffer a horror.

I'm just kidding of course. Just hope those Konica body caps are strong enough. Sure wouldn't put my 75 'lux or, of all things, the f/1 lens on one, though.

Lord, Tony, what kind of pockets do you have that will hold a 75 and a Noct back to back? (Like the poster said on the other thread, as Mae West asked....)

Leica lenses aren't expensive; ya just have ta buy 'em slower.

Aaaa-men! I'm gettin' a wee bit tired of only my 90mm. I keep on backing into things...

This is a very useful post, thanks!

Why overpay for a piece of plastic...

Thanks for the info Dave.

I thought from the title that your camera was either stolen, lost, dropped and immediately got run over by a truck. The third incident actually happened to a friend's M6--now that's "horror".

Tony, I also think the word "horror" in this forum should be used in the context of "Apocalypse Now" scenes, and Leica M's being subjected to apocalyptic circumstances.

About $6 for generic Leica M rear lens caps here in Tokyo... I'd never dream they existed if I was shopping by internet. Real, walk in stores add value you know...

Congratulations to Ron for recognizing the literary reference in the title! Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now quote.

I also was hoping for a horror story. Maybe to make me feel better for letting my M6 get run over by a car (although it WAS insured).

Nonetheless, the Konica cap tip is a great one.

I thought the horror related to Dennis Hopper carrying Nikons instead of Leicas :-)

... or does my memory fail?
