Archaeologists unearth Roman-era cemetery in southern Syria

By Associated Press, 7/8/2001 10:34

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) A cemetery dating back to the end of the Roman era has recently been unearthed in southern Syria, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The cemetery, discovered in Daraa, 50 miles south of the capital, Damascus, consists of three small tombs, the state-run Tishrin said. Each contains skeletons, metal bracelets and clay lanterns with crosses.

Mohammed al-Rifaei, head of the Daraa Archaeological Department, told the paper the cemetery likely belonged to a poor family because there were several skeletons in each tomb.
