A US company claims to be developing the world's first genetically modified pet. The hypoallergenic GM cat will be designed not to cause allergic reactions such as sneezing and itching in humans. Dr David Avner, the founder of the company, Transgenic Pets, says that the "no-sneeze" cat could be produced by 2003 and sell for a little as $530 each. Yet, animal rights groups have condemned the move, saying that the outcome may not even be a cat at all.
