An interesting article for discusssion[philosophy]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Everyone check out this link. I found this site while preparing some info on self-sufficiency for this board and a mailing list I am on. This should bring about some discussion. I personally do not agree with this person's conclusions. Have fun.

Wow... Takes that guy a lot of examples to make his point, doesn't he? Of course, that happens when one has so many points to make. I too, am unsure about some of those points....

IMHO ONLY...

Every life form is dependant in some way on every other. To overload such a system in any or all of its parts is to flirt with disaster.

To abandon knowledge is always a mistake. Those who do not learn from their past ARE doomed to repeat it. That's what archives, libraries and museums are for. To preserve knowledge. Of course, this assumes that people are willing use the facilities to LEARN in the first place...

Over-population? Depends on if you mind feeding GMO food to your kids. Or, if you believe that humans belong on other planets, etc etc. I don't.

Self-sufficiency is wonderful. I love doing things for myself -especially things that some people think can't (or shouldn't) be done by 'normal' folks... Gives me a kick! But, in its purest form, it can never happen. Complete, total and absolute self-sufficiency is not, never has been and never will be possible. If it were, God would not have needed to create all that he did prior to making Adam, nor would he have needed Eve after Adam expelled Lilith. In fact, IF God created Man as companion and co-creator (even servant), then even God Him(Her/It)self is not completely and absolutely self-sufficient.

As for Mark Twain and vampire bats - well, I love Twain - flowery speech and all, and he did have a certain knack for putting faces on human nature. Vampire bats are at best a fair fit when it comes to describing today's human society. The bat will take the same from a kitten as it does from a wolf. It will share only with those it wishes to share with - a bat from another colony is more likely to be attacked and killed than fed. Differences?? Bats are not known to make moral judgements, only survival judgements. Man, on the other hand, will make a moral judgement INTO a survival judgement.
