Another earthquake strikes southern Peru; no serious injuries reported

By Associated Press, 7/7/2001 08:21

LIMA, Peru (AP) An earthquake rattled southern Peru before dawn Saturday, causing some structural damage. No serious injuries were reported.

The quake's epicenter was near the town of Ocona, 385 miles southeast of the capital, Lima, Peru's Geophysical Institute said.

The Geophysical Institute said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.5, but the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo., reported it at 7.2.

Cable news station Canal N reported some walls had toppled and that at least one house collapsed after its occupants had scrambled to safety in Arequipa, Peru's second largest city.

Some homes, damaged by an earlier, more powerful earthquake, toppled in towns near the epicenter of Saturday's quake, radio station Radioprogramas said.

The earthquake was the third to hit the area in as many days and came two weeks after an 8.1-magnitude temblor devastated parts of the Andean nation, killing at least 75 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

President-elect Alejandro Toledo announced late Friday that he had secured $52 million in international aid to help earthquake victims during a 12-day official tour in the United States and Europe.

Authorities said a magnitude-5 earthquake early Friday in the same zone caused several landslides and blocked parts of the Panamerican highway in Peru's southern coastal desert.

A magnitude-6 quake hit the region Thursday morning, sparking panic and causing hundreds of already severely damaged homes to collapse.
