A fire at a Potomac Electric Power Co. substation in Prince George's County knocked out power to about 13,000 customers last night in Seat Pleasant, Largo and Landover, authorities said.

Officials were uncertain of the fire's cause last night but believed it started about 10 p.m. in the basement of the building in the 7300 block of Central Avenue in Capitol Heights, said Capt. Chauncey Bowers, a county fire department spokesman.

About 40 firefighters kept the fire contained during the first hour, until the main power supply could be cut and the blaze could be extinguished, Bowers said.

No injuries were reported.

Customers lost power at about 11 p.m., Pepco spokesman David Morehead said. Crews worked last night to reroute power to those affected, but officials were uncertain when service would be restored.
