Watch it Bobby, you're just jealous I haven't targeted you....YET!

Swift, have you been taking drugs again? your trying very hard to take over Buff's mantle of most confusing poster!

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

cheers Gav, gotta keep you thinking, now that could be dangerous

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

Henman has Scalectrix syndrome.....one lap in the lead and whoosh.....straight off the track and under the sideboard!(:o)

I`d still like to see him do well, though Andrea Agassi will always be my favourite.

Henman has played pretty damned well to get to the Semis, and while I dislike the jingoism that surrounds his efforts, he really has done us proud. He can beat Ivanisevic, unless Goran is at the top of his game where his serve could be decisive.
Unfortunately, I don't think Henman has the game to beat either Rafter of Agassi.
Neverthless, a British Finalist would be great - not to mention a very creditable achievement for the guy. Well done Tim.

He still reminds me of a tadpole!

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

And he's a Mag supporter, would you believe.

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

Always thought he was a classy guy

Buff, wasn't dissing your postings man, you are without a doubt THE most interesting poster on this BBS, I love trying to decipher them :))

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

Well, he's doing alright so far. That third set was something I've never seen before from Henman.

The Rafter v Aggasi game was pretty special too, I reckon Rafter in the final against Henman would be a canny match. Returns are one of Henman's main strengths and this would serve him well against Rafter's "get as many aces as you can" game.

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

The crowd can help him with their support but not by shouting "c'mon Timmy" that has got to be off-putting.

-- Anonymous, July 07, 2001

Got Men's Finals tickets, so I hope he makes it.

Sat on Centre Court for the end of one of his wins in the first week and the atmosphere then was absolutely incredible. The poor guy at the other end was visibly wilting during the last few games. God knows what it will be like if he actually gets into the final - and wins. Long way to go before that.

Rafter's a good guy and would also make a great champion. Would also liked to have seen Agassi get there...but Galaxy has explained all. No wonder Andre / Andrea walks like a pigeon!

Thank God for the rain. If the match had continued there, Henman would have lost, I'm certain of it. Hopefully he can remember how to return Goran's serves.

Anyone else find the fourth set a bit boring? Ace after ace with no real rallies. I hope Henman gets through as a final between Rafter and Goran is potentially as bad as watching paint dry.

-- Anonymous, July 07, 2001

Yes, I agree on both points. That set was pretty boring and I think he would have lost had it continued. However, I think there's a fair chance of him losing the 5th anyway. Ivanisevic has the momentum behind him, and despite another overnight break, I think he will come out full of conficence. He's leading 3-2 and 15-30 up against Henman's serve.

IMHO, Henman's chance went when the game was stopped at the beginning of the 4th. Ivanisevic was lookinmg like a loser. But in the same way that Henman benefitted against Martin, so did Ivanisevic. It's part of the game. Henman's best chance to win has gone, with Sampras out. But net year, he may be back, but there are also some pretty useful young 'uns coming thru too. I hope I'm wrong about this year's tourney.

Yes, make that "had Men's Finals" tickets.

Final just re-scheduled for Monday, which has to be the sensible decision. I'm sure they're queueing outside now for Monday in case Henman can do it.

According to this year's championship rules, there should be 13,806 Centre Court tickets on sale on a first come, first served basis on Monday, less the Debenture / Corporate tickets...which leaves 806. Seriously, would be amazing atmosphere IF he got through with rival British / (perhaps even louder) Aussie fans. London, as always, is full of Aussies this summer...and they'll all be making for SW19.

And agree Henman looked on the way out before last rain break. Still fear Goran will finish him off. But there will be at least one Geordie on Centre Court at 1pm tomorrow serving up a "Haway Henman!"

-- Anonymous, July 07, 2001

Benton, wear your colours - I noticed Weardale Coaches drop another bus load off at SW19 again today!

-- Anonymous, July 07, 2001

...well, it was black & white when Fred Perry last won it in 1936 and Henry "Bunny" Austin got to the final in 1938.

And watching Henman in SW 19 is usually sheer torture...just like it often is watching the lads in NE Where...

Choker...

-- Anonymous, July 08, 2001

Just got back from a very long day at Wimbledon. Four points:

15 - 0: If Henman had the killer instinct of Venus Williams in her final set today, Wimbledon would be under siege tonight, instead of just 1,000 Aussies queuing overnight for tomorrow's final. Just hope they've all got £40 in cash in their pockets. By noon tomorrow Centre Court should be an Oz republic.

30-0: Very easy to label Henman a choker...my knees were shaking just watching the final set 30 rows up. But he did show more guts over the last three days than I suspect many thought he had.

40-0: Goran reckons it's "destiny" with God on his side by sending rain. From the post-match comments I've seen, Henman - called a "has- been in waiting" by one of today's posh papers - was determined in defeat, and on another level for next year...when it just happens to be Her Maj's Golden Jubilee.

Game, set and match 2002?: Yes, OK, he'll probably lose in the first round. But stranger things have happened. Haway Henman!

-- Anonymous, July 08, 2001

Easy to damn the lad, but during the first day's play Henman played brilliantly, had Ivanisevic cursing and throwing his racket around, and imo would have won handsomely. The extended breaks allowed Goran to come back calm and collected and use his massive serve decisively.

No disgrace in this defeat imo. However, if we're talking about our national cricket team ......................

Someone said that Henman is a Toon fan. Is this true? I recall him pitured in a local paper with a Toon top but assumed that was a PR exercise.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

So who's going to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award now then?

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

Alan Shearer.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

Murray Walker for standing up for 2.5 hours in his 70's. Or a rower.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

Goran wins championship - beating Rafter 8-6 in the fifth set. Absolutely stunning match. And perhaps puts a slightly better spin on Henman's defeat.

Goran's wildcard win must be one of the greatest sporting stories of all time. What a star.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

err...make that 9-7 in the fifth. Well, it was just a little exciting.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

Quite glad that Goran won. He should have won that Final against Agassi and was desperately unfortunate not to. It's like Batistuta finally getting a medal. With any luck, Al will get another medal, too.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

He plays football as well, I had a kick about with him on the Esplanade in Perth when he was here for the Hopman Cup.

I wonder what he does from August until May..............

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

Pleased for Goran the Head-Banger, but felt desperately sorry for Pat Rafter - really class guy.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2001

I see Goran is nominated as an "Honorary Brit". We seem to have a soft spot for Croatians - that's very similar to the title many at SJP bestowed on his fellow countryman Maric as I vaguely recall. :-)

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

That was the title his girl gave him (something may have got lost in the translation) when he dumped her. How could she describe a hero to many like that. Sounds a charming lady.
