This morning's Journal is carrying this story:

Newcastle United - Toon News

Jul 5 2001

Ian Edwards Toon star Kieron Dyer has set his heart on joining David O'Leary's ambitious young Leeds side.

Manager O'Leary is poised to strike the first telling blow in his battle with Manchester United by making an £18million bid for the 22-year-old after the Newcastle striker revealed his desire to move to Elland Road.

Dyer has told close pal Rio Ferdinand that he wants to quit St James's Park and further his international career under O'Leary.

A source close to Ferdinand admitted last night: "Kieron has made it clear that he wants to go to Leeds. He believes Leeds are going places - unlike Newcastle."

O'Leary has been dormant in the transfer market this summer, biding his time to land his number one target.

Now he is ready to act swiftly to equal the British transfer record he set with the signing of Ferdinand from West Ham last season.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has been asked to be kept informed of Dyer's situation - despite warnings from Newcastle chief executive Freddy Shepherd that he is not for sale. But now Leeds are ready to go on the offensive in an all-out effort to land Dyer ahead of Ferguson and hand another humiliating blow to the reigning champions.

Ridsdale has constantly assured worried Leeds fans that there would be transfer activity soon and said: "It is important that we are patient.

"That was the way we did our business with Rio Ferdinand and we have to continue that way.

"We can see some light at the end of the tunnel and one of our transfer targets is gettable."

Leeds are prepared to use Michael Bridges as part of the bait to land Dyer - with the former Sunderland striker valued at £10m.

Bridges missed virtually the whole of last season with a serious ankle injury, but is expected to be fit for the start of the season.

The decision of Mark Viduka to remain at Elland Road has been a deciding factor in persuading a reluctant O'Leary to allow Bridges to return to the North East. Viduka's accountant Rudi Horvat is due at Elland Road today to put the finishing touches to a new five-year deal worth £25,000-a-week for the 26-year-old Aussie.

Viduka's situation has always been the key to Bridges' future at Leeds, following his £5m arrival from Sunderland two seasons ago.

Now O'Leary is willing to sacrifice the England Under-21 international to bring a two-year pursuit of Dyer to a successful conclusion.

Newcastle have made a record £9.5million bid for Paris St Germain's explosive striker Laurent Robert as Toon boss Bobby Robson goes for a new-look front line.

Robson hopes to get the go-ahead for talks this week to make the fiery Robert his big summer signing.

Robert has been in dispute with PSG for months but showed his talent by smashing a hat-trick in the InterToto Cup at the weekend.

The size of the offer proves Newcastle mean business as they follow up the signing of Craig Bellamy.

This really pisses me off. F***in' teams using players as their unofficial mouthpieces. If a club orificial said that or tried to "poach" a player, they'd be reprimanded. But it's OK for one of the players/mates to do it.

So much for his f***in' desire to stay at Toon. Oh, hang on, it was in the papers so it can't be true.

If Robert has already played in the Intertoto, does that mean he would be cup-tied if he signs for us?

bilge, he's going to Leeds, and i for one hope if he does i hope Leeds go bankrupt after he's never fit

Lets hope it's nothing more than paper talk, we certainly seem so down at the moment that we're almost willing to believe it immediately, the lad has made all the right noises about staying so i'm gonna take him at his word.....

Geordie, I'd consider it at 15 mill + bridges and not a penny less!

Dyer isn't fit to lace Pedro's boots. Thats not a statement based on this 'news' he just isn't. Pedro is a legend, i doubt Dyer ever will be.

Yup I'd go along with that....

Robson is supposed to have said to KD that he could be a hero for us. He still could be and I hope he stays. But money does a lot of talking
