Way to get better magnification in EOS zooms

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

What are your advices for a better magnification in close photos(to about some 50-200 mm working distances? Ý have EOS 300 28-80 with close-ups(i cant remember the futures now). Ý get good results with the subjects of 2-3 cm length, but of course not with smaller ones. Ý want to have 10-20x magnification of an insect in the photo. Should i buy a new lense/flash/additional equipment?

Ý didnt read all of the messages written on the board as i quite a bit "astonished" from the abundance of model names and numbers, but have to ask a question

a zoom lens (like mine)+extension tubes+close-ups=?-->this is the cheapest way but is it worth anything

I'd recommend bellows + one of the 2- maybe 3- lenses Canon make for really close work! Anyhting bigger than 1:1 really needs special gear. These lenses are designed to be Bellows mounted, are small, and dont have a focusing mechanism (cos they fit on bellows). I believe they are not unduly expensive, but someone on this board will surely know the model numbers and prices!

The zoom+ tubes+ close up filters sounds like a recipe for disaster!

Cheers JIM

Well, the 28-80 is a pretty low end zoom so if you can deal with the inmagine quality there, then you should be fine with adding accessories. I personally use extension tubes on a 24-85mm (at about 25mm with 25mm extension tube will give you 1:1) or a 50mm f1.8 or 100mm f2 primes. All with really nice results. You will lose some light but I have found for most work, the results are wonderful.
