Were his halluicantions (Please correct me if I spelled it wrong) the cause of his drinking problem, or was it just insanity?

What hallucinations?

I do believe that I have read in a magazine article or in a seperate work on Poe that he saw halluncinations of Helen. I could very easily be wrong though too.

Poe's own description of a late case of the D.T.'s when he was jailed(once!) involved the dismemberment of his mother-in-law Mrs. Clemm and a vision of a non-specific lady in a silvery glow. He did not sound too inspired. No, his poetic visions or fancies were not like William Blake's angel sightings, but the mainstream metaphors of romantic feeling. Dreams may have played a part in imagery communicating feeling or vice versa, as dreams usually are. Give the guy some credit for imagination, please. Even though Stephen King admits to more alcoholism, etc. than Poe no one keeps claiming he must have seen those horrors he writes about.

well i dont really understand what you are talking about exactally, but in speaking of Poe it is said every killing and crazy act in his literature was what he did and/or what he wanted to do. but please correct me if i am wrong.
