Non-footy controversy: fave cities

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

This has been done before but which city is your favourite. Can't, for these purposes, say Newcastle. My fave would have to be Barcelona followed by Stockholm.

Berlin + Amsterdam.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

by, everybody's going a bundle on Sydney, bloody freezing it is here, serious.

It's very nice but as Bryson rightly points out, withoot the harbour it's pretty average, which of course, it isn't....without the harbour. Cairns man Bobby?

Can I plonk in London for old times sake? See yer get all whistful from here....(I assume it doesn't include Newcastle this?)

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Cairns because I was there last summer for my honeymoon. Stayed at some fabulous hotels and saw some wonderful sights (no smutty comments please). It was a chilled out place to be.

Sydney is more than just the harbour views (which are magnificent at sunrise). I loved it there too. And it can't be freezing! It only ever gets down to about 12C!

Well Doufgal we're off to Stockholm for our holidays this weekend, suddenly I feel more excited, you're such a good tease

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

For me it would have to be new york, so good they named it twice.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Venice followed by Rome !

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

The first time being New Amsterdam, wasn't it? :-)

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Paris, Vienna, Perth, Budapest

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

1) New York - simply amazing 2) Toronto - love the place. 3) Miami - very different, very alive...

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Florence, San Francisco, Verona, Madrid, London, Hamburg.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Toronto, San Francisco and Amsterdam in that order.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

New York, Rome - an ancient ruin round every corner and I love Barca but London sneaks in just ahead of it.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Glad you like Sthlm dougal, I live there, a very nice city. Now its 30 degress celsius outside and this time of year Stockholm must be one of the most beatiful citys in the world.

So you are coming to Sthlm MacB, if you have some time I'll be glad to go out and grab a beer with you.

My favourites? Rome followed by Stockholm. I have a feeling I will like New York and Toronto but havent been able to go there yet.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Sudden, I went there to do a shortish law course at Stockholm University and really loved the place and the people. There were other Swedish cities that I quite liked - Gothenberg and Malmo in particular - but I really loved Stockholm. Actually, I used to like Dublin before it became Europe's No1 Stag Venue.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

MacBeth - you'll have an ace time in Stockholm: the Swedes are great people. Bit expensive, like, but well worth it.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Not so expensive anymore I think. The SEK is cheap nowadays, you get more then 15 SEK for one pound. 15 sek is about 40% the cost of a Big Mac & Co =)

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

NYC, Prague and St.John's in Antigua all for reasons of abject sloppiness. Had to laugh at Roly's 'Sunderland' posting, most mackems concede it's a toilet.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

How long did you live here Dougal?

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Sydney and Austin,TX

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

SanFransisco....loved it!

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

In no particular order....New York, Boston, Sydney, London, Brussels, Montreal

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Sudden - just five months but long enough to really get to love the place.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Sudden we're staying at firends house in Aby

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Sudden - it's spelt S-E-X not S-E-K! ;-{)

San Diego - love the place. Other likes - Seattle, Munich, Barcelona, Florence, and Boston (but definitely not in winter!)

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Ah sorry clarky. Not only have we a beatiful city we also have the most beautiful women in the world. Anyone agree/disagree?

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Sudden, you have some of the most beautiful women in the world, but not all. Remember that the renowned talent hotbed known as Sunderland is not in Sweden.

Favourite cites is a tough one, haven't been to that many.

The cities I've visited - Paris, London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Orlando area (is that a city?) Barcelona, Le Mans, Nantes, Cannes.

Favourties probably are Edinburgh and Paris. Can't really remember that much about most of them as we were normally just passing through, not staying.

Oh, then there is Sunderland. So easy to get to via plane or metro, it features such delights as Sunderland Arena, as well as hosting posssibly the best team that hasn't played in Europe for 30 years.

Madrid for its wonderful nightlife but not as good as the big apple.Everything about NYC is exciting and makes you feel good to be alive.A bit like whickham really!!!!!!!!!! Oh and i thought milano was shite when i went.Could not get a drink . Disco hollywood did not want english in and the city itself was dirty.San siro was impressive though. Milan 2-1 lazio feb 2000.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Actually, Sydney is bloody cold. Got down to 15 degrees tuther night. May fave has to be Derby. If you can't pull in Derby, you might as well shoot yer sel. Cains is cool too.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

15? Celsius? You Aussies are wimps! That's nearly shorts weather! Now Boston in winter......that's cold! Right, Clarky? ;-))

BTW, Clarky which winter were you in Boston? We did have a couple of particularly nasty ones around the mid-90's. The last 2 or 3 were actually quite mild(for Boston). ;-) Summer, fall, and late spring are really the best seasons for that region.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

I have to admit Calgary, Alberta is my first pick. San Diego a close second. All the rest are nothing more than big cities....NYC, Toronto, London, Washington, etc etc etc....

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Sydney , Rome ,Dubai , Ibiza Town (not san Antonio ! ) , and Singapore . Sydney for the beaches , the views and the open mindedness . Rome for its beauty , ruins and passionate people . Dubai for its Souqs , waters , climate and taxes . Ibiza Town for its backstreets , beautiful people and the two best nightclubs in the universe .. Space and Pacha . Singapore for its unashamed wealth , cleanliness and crime friendly CBD . This world is a beautiful place :-))) . BTW its the middle of winter here in Sydney and its 20 degrees celsius , bliddy freezing man !

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

I'm not an Aussie. I'm Hexham born and bred. Singapore is dull Sting.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Paris, Barca & Hong Kong

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Hexham, just outside pizza pizza

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

My faves excluding TGC are, in no particular order, Vancouver, Istanbul, Toronto, Stockholm, Bath.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Perth. There for the Bicentenary and caught AC/DC and the Floyd for good measure. Terrific people, brilliant attitude, unbroken 30+degrees for 4 weeks, 24hour bars, beaches, breasts, beer, bullshitters and a cruise up the Swan River which would have made a Glaswegian think about his liver. Bliss.

Loved living in Cape Town because there was always the mountain. If you've ever lived at the back of it or gone walking and climbing up there you'll know what I mean. A truly spiritual place. A bit too twitchy on the streets to really relax.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Softie caught AC/DC

I didn't realise that sexual orientation was transmissable. Or do they tackle things differently down under. Ffnnaaaar

Berlin, Tashkent, Samarkand, Turin and Valencia

Amsterdam & Dublin

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

I can't believe no one said Chicago. Mind you it's not my favourite. Come October Moorea (Tahiti) is going to be my alltime favourite followed with a distant second of Aspen.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Never touched Aspen CO, syme - but stayed overnight in Vail on a cross-Rockie (Denver to Pheonix) solo drive a couple of years ago.
It has to be said that it was October - not exactly 'in- season' - but I thought it was a ghastly, pretentious, plastic town. A kind of Disney ski resort. Is Aspen different?

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

I hate cities, even Newcastle. Give me the countryside / beach / mountains,te great outdoors anyday.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Wise choice living in North Shields then Rik?

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Clarky...Spent many summers and winters in Vail, it is prententious and plastic, but if I mentioned some small mining towns outside of vail or aspent you'd think I am nuts (more so) Aspen is very similar, although I have to admit there is nothing better than taking a mountain bike up to the top via ski lift and riding down. Talk about ride of a lifetime.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Softie by naming Perth as your fave city, you will no longer be able to visit. We have strict rules about visitors extolling its virtues as this only attracts more people.

The longer it is kept a secret the better it is for those who have discovered it. Let Sydney etc get all the publicity.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Sorry gus, it must have been the fact that everyone on the East coast was really laid back and took you at face value whilst the folk from the East I met did all the anti-pom stuff but without the smile that makes it ok. Probably just unlucky in the people I met.

toon expat - what can I say? There was a whole yacht basin full of sailors and I was in the full bloom of youth and all alone on a foreign shore. Must have been doing wrong, mind, as my eardrums were ruined but my a*se didn't hurt a bit :-)

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

Like Rik ??? I hate cities , policy was always go the opposite way to the majority and in my view meet the `real people`, if pushed I would say for various reasons, Medina (I can be a big loud sod) so the silent city had its attractions, Marseilles purely for the fear factor, I was on edge all the time and loved it, and finally George- town ex Brit Guyana, the wide streets and Dutch influence appealed at the time. For interest a poll conducted world wide when we had a Fleet in the early 60`s to determine the best run ashore, (slightly different to fave city criteria) had Cophenagen 1 followed closely by Newcastle, in no small measure due to the kindness of S and N and the local girls to visiting navy personell, remember no state of the art Bigg Market and trendy Quayside them days, just people friendly.

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

syme,
On the same trip, I got snowed in (yes in October!) in a former silver mining town called Silverton CO - the sterotypical cowboy town. There were none of the customary chain motels, so I stayed overnight at the local saloon - The Silver Dollar - which was just great, a real experience.
