TOON TURN DOWN TIGANA APPROACH

Fulham boss Jean Tigana has confirmed his interest in Newcastle United centre-back Aaron Hughes, but Bobby Robson has turned down a £3m approach.

Hughes is, without doubt, one of the most promising defenders in The Premiership and, at just 21, has his whole career in front of him. Robson is looking to build his defence around the Nothern Ireland international and, have suffered yet another rebuff, Tigana is now likely to return to Monaco to try and tempt Didier Deschamps to part with the £7m rated Martin Djetou.

£3mm is easy to turn down. £6mm would make it much , much harder.

If we sold him for less than half of what we bought Bellamy for i'd seriously start to question whether or not it's worth bothering.

Thing is, Clarky, it's more than the money with our youth team product - in order to attract youngsters and save money in the future, we have to be seen to be giving youngsters a real chance, and flogging Aaron for whatever price would give out the wrong signals and suggest we'd learnt nowt.

Commercial realities pet - every player has his price. At £3mm 'the price is not right' for Aaron Hughes.

At £3m or £6m, he should NOT be sold. He is vital to our team over the next few seasons and would be a major loss. Considering Rio Ferdinand went for £18m, are Fulham really suggesting that Rio is 600% of the player Hughes is?

what's with Hughsie??? Is he the next Gary Speed or something?? Oh Dougs... you wear you heart on yer sleeve luv...not to fret, Bobby may have lost some grey matter (as a matter of his age is all I mean) but he knows what he has left.

Paul - divven fret man. Fulham are not going to offer £6mm for Hughsie, so it's all academic. I was just trying to make a point.

Clarky, I know what you mean, but, IMHO, the commercial reality is that we need a good youth policy or we risk being another Man City. 6 million pounds would be a short term bonus.

Dabizas and O'Brien looked a fairly comfortable partnership last season and with a bit more time could develop into a solid partnership. But where does that leave Aaron?

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Paul, that is my exact point. It would short term commercial foolishness IMHO to flog him as well as a betrayal of fans. People think it's just because he's cute that I go on about him but the fact is, the boy LOVES Newcastle and has said that he would happily stay in Newcastle for the rest of his life. You can't buy that attitude.

just got this from the Mills and Boon news feed, some turkey has posted the last page of the new book "field of dreams" and does this not mirror reality?

...Aaron, his steely jaw and dark complexion showing no sign of wavering, packed his last neatly ironed Polo 'airflex' shirt into the Adidas sports bag. "Don't go" shrieked Lynda, her French lace falling off her naked shoulder, "Why are you leaving me?" she cried with all her heart. The professional footballer stopped to take one last gaze into the burning eyes of the young nymph he was so cruelly casting to one side. "I'm leaving, for someone who wants me" he insisted with his strong and passionate Irish lilt. His strapping, manly, arms clasped the stricken raven haired temptress as he delivered the words which were to haunt her until next season "I'm leaving for a Frenchman, i'm going to be a cottager". The air rippled with a pulsating perfume as the door slammed. Now, Lynda can cry alone on her field of broken dreams...

DOUGAL WHERE DID YOU FIND THE ARTICLE ABOUT THE BID BEING REJECTED?

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

Bobby, it was on MidasSport and various papers today said we were unlikely to accept the bid. Why? Don't tell me you've heard otherwise.

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

There are reports that Fulham have switched their attnetion to Arsenal's Matthew Upson having been rebuffed by the Toon for Aaron Hughes.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

...he just could not bear life without Dougal...
