Beware of old women

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

It has been funny at times, over the last week or so, but yesterday was the pinnacle for me.

What a bunch of old women there was on here.

With no real news of note everyone has gone into the worst case scenario and then found another even worser version of it.

  1. Poor season of results, sets negative mindset as norm
  2. Petulant, over priced kid, turns us down to go to Arsenal: great gnashing of teeth at the insult
  3. We have offer for Dutch international accepted but he wants to go elsewhere, even shorter teeth
  4. Buy a player who we'd have jumped at a year ago, but not so sure about now, anger at waste of money
  5. Linked with unheard of player on a free, anger at waste of something, or lack of ambition
  6. Joy at unexpected possible route into Europe, dismay at having to play unplanned games
  7. Dismay at lack of training academy, anger when we buy a ready made one
  8. Dismay at poor quality of coaching staff, dismay when chief coach leaves

I'm sure there are more.

Are we turning into Spurs supporters, who worry about going 2-0 up because it is so embarrassing to lose from that position ?

Lighten up boys and girls.

Thanks for the perspective MacB. There really aren't any easy, quick fixes and the sooner we realise that at the moment we are only a mid table EPS side the better. Not that we want to stay in that position, but we need to build again to get back to being able to compete with the top six before we can expect big names to come knocking on the door asking to play for us. And let's not make the job more difficult by giving free reign to our frustration, and sniping at every signing, management decision etc made. YBR might have blamed the media re Wadsworth, but the media also just write what they know the public want to hear. I'm not saying we shouldn't criticise, just that we need to keep control of it and make sure it doesn't take on a life of it's won.

where do you get off being so positive Peter?

-- Anonymous, July 04, 2001

As the cliche goes sport's all in the mind. I just feel were in danger of creating a self-fulfilling prophecy with all the negativity at the moment. If we keep saying we';re sh@t, we'll end up being sh@t.

Case in point last night at our local cricket Colts XI. Wrong attitude led to some dreadful bowling and misfields - opposition reached 164-6 off 20 overs. Batting was also bad. They're not a bad side, just no belief in themselves...and it was a semi-final

Do not know if this is just an attempt at something MacBeth, however a couple of your points do not ring too true.

Anger when we buy a ready made academy? From what I read and hear it is far from the completed article.

And re the disappearing coach, almost to a man the despair was not that he left, but the manner and timing of it.

Some fans seem only to see the black.

The club do seem to be up against the evil counil re. the training facilities. If Bellemy is used in his Norwich role he may be OK but £6m should guarantee quality, we paid over the odds

Macbeth - your point is very well made. It seems to me that people want to knock the club at present regardless of what it does. If Bellamy was sold for £12m before the season begins there would be those up in arms on here about us being a selling club.

However, a much more serious point is your thread title. I am absolutely serious when I say I find it DEEPLY OFFENSIVE. Substitute the words "black people" and you might start to get an idea of just how offensive it is. I know that no offence was intended but that is the big danger. When such terms are used it reduces the respect for that group and people can bandy around such offensive terms as "the old biddy", in the same way that we used to bandy around offensive terms for people of different ethnic origins - words that I can't even put on here in quotes.

Me mam was an old woman towards the end of her life and her opinions on things were deserving of as much respect as anyone else (more respect indeed because of her experience). At some long distant point in the future Galaxy will become an old woman. Again her opinions will still be much appreciated.

Political correctness gone mad? Worry at my own advancing years? No - I've held this view since I was 8 and used to link arms with me Grandma as we walked down the street together. The all-pervasive disrespect for the aged in our society is appalling and must be challenged at every opportunity and reversed.

you're supposed to be happy when they give you your bus pass Jonno

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Isn't the point that we associate old people with excessive complaining? hmm....that's kinda what Jonno is doing here ;))

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Never used to complain in my day ;-)

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

I'd like to be able to go into the admin area and change the name of the thread to 'Beware of whingers' but that would be a slur on whingers who then moan on about their rights.

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Huh. No sooner gets his feet under the table at SJP and he comes on here with the party-line telling us everything's wonderful :-)

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

yep, and it was just so easy, once I tasted the lapdancers finger buffet I was converted

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Have you been rolling cigarettes the Bill Hicks way mac?

-- Anonymous, July 05, 2001

Nice to know that someone will still be listening to me when I reach my dotage Jonno! (:o)

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

I know it is a question no gentleman should ask a lady, Galaxy, but what age is your dot?

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

Same age as the rest of me Gus! (;o)

-- Anonymous, July 06, 2001

Nice to know that someone will still be listening to me when I reach my dotage

Well Galaxy my hearing will be non-existant by then so I'll just nod politely while you babble on. No change there then! :-)
