Minor Quake Hits Upstate New York The Associated Press Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001; 2:01 a.m. EST

HORNELL, N.Y. –– A mild earthquake shook residents of upstate New York on Saturday, but there were no reports of injuries or damage.

The earthquake measured 2.9 on the Richter scale and hit an area about 75 miles southeast of Buffalo, according to the National Earthquake Information Center.

Homeowner William Walfe told television station WETM the tremors were enough to shake his home, but there was no serious structural damage.

The quake struck at 3:15 p.m., just hours after a 2.5 to 2.8 magnitude earthquake shook southern Connecticut, in the shoreline town of Guilford, about 10 miles east of New Haven.

The Guilford quake was also minor, with no serious damage.

Small earthquake hits southern Connecticut

By Associated Press, 2/3/2001 22:10

GUILFORD, Conn. (AP) A small earthquake shook southern Connecticut Saturday afternoon, causing a few scares but no major damage.

Estimates varied on its size and the location of its center.

Yale University geologist Jeffrey Park said the magnitude of the earthquake was about 2.5 to 2.8. He said it was centered in the shoreline town of Guilford, about 10 miles east of New Haven.

Juliette Kahn of the state Office of Emergency Management said the quake's magnitude was 1.8 and it was centered in North Branford, just northwest of Guilford.

The quake began at about 12:50 p.m. and ended a brief time later, Kahn said. She said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

''It is strange for these parts,'' Park said. ''But there are small tremors and there are old faults in the area.

The earthquake was the third in Connecticut in the last seven months. One occurred in Granby in June and another occurred in Salem in August.

Yesterday DH & I noticed that one concrete section of our driveway sunk or shifted about ¼”. We know that it happened recently, probably the night before because you can see it and it was not like that before.

The driveway is not new and we have never had a problem like this in the 13 years we lived here. We are in MA, not far from the coast.

It usually measn a sinkhole is forming.

do you guys have sink holes up there?

Although they were small on the scale, you take care, as I am feeling ALOT of pressure today... I think these are the "little" bites before the big "gulp"......Just to be safe....if you have some cherished things, (Breakable) I'd be packing them awhile.

(I keep thinking I should do that, and think, I'll do it later....) yea, I might just be "sweeping" them up! Barefoot, I have only heard of a few sinkholes in these parts in the past few years. I’m going to look into it later today and see what I can come up with.

We are not sure if one section sunk or the other shifted. The car is parked on the bottom of the driveway on the other side now. We definitely need to keep an eye on this, especially since it is very close to the house!

Sue, something is definitely up with the earth. We hardly ever got tremors or sm EQ’s in this area until recently. A few years ago one was centered not far from our house.

I looked into getting earthquake insurance, but what they would cover was very limited. If I rememberr correctly, it only covered damage to the structure of the house, not the pool or any personal items. I didn't think we would ever get one big enough to cause damage to the house's foundation or anything like that. Maybe I should look into it again.

In, if you have a basement there.

Finding them now could be cheaper than seeing them later. I hope it is just a case of 10 years of freeze/thaw, but better to know for sure!

It’s about a cars length from the house, the attached garage actually, but I’d say that’s close! I'm going to check the basement and outside later today. I hope it’s just that freeze thaw thing! The driveway is about 15 yrs old.

It just so happens that we have someone stopping by tonight to check on some work we need done in the house. I’m going to get his take on it. He is very knowledgeable about houses and land and stuff. Thanks again!

I got the kind that pays full value for any item that would be damaged. We are in Illinois close to chicago. Everybody said we were stupid to do so... but you know I would rather be safe then sorry later. z ~Come Join Us at OurCountryHaven Community!~ Maggie MM World's Bestest News Finder! I paid over $500 a year in California and was very glad we had it, because of all the damage down to our house...due to the Northridge earthquake in 94.

Do you remember if you got your EQ insurance through your homeowners or as a separate policy?

I ask because my homeowners wanted more than $17 and as I mentioned before that was only for structural damage, not for the pool, fence, trees falling, etc and no personal possessions, furniture, appliances, etc.

The insurance that I have now is an addendom to my homeowners policy, I believe. I know the insurance I have, won't pay for all of the loss of personal property (things in the house). The insurance that I had in Calif. was called earthquake insurance and we bought it from the same insurance company that we had our homeowners insurance through, think it was also a rider policy but, not sure. It covered the house, inground pool, concrete fence, personel property, I think everything we had was insured/covered.

By the way, I heard yesterday, N.Y. just got 4.5 million dollars for more research on earthquakes. Just a tid bit that I thought I'd pass on.

Maybe they only offer basic structural coverage around here and make us pay more. I’m sure I can investigate it more now with online resources.

If I remember correctly, the state of NY had two quakes in the past few weeks!

That's what went thru my head when I heard about the 4.5 million to NY. You know how you hear so many differnt things, well I remember hearing a long time ago, that NY would have a large EQ before the big one hit Calif.,don't know if it is true or not.

Kona2 Forum Guide Posts: 114 (2/7/01 4:17:57 am) Reply | Edit | Del Re: Two Minor Quakes in the Northeast -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see and hear so much as well. I do know that there are faults here in the East than can become active. Actually, the past five or so years this area has been getting more small EQ’s than I ever remember. So, I guess it has already started.

I only remember 1 that shook the house about 20+ years ago when I was a teenager. Don’t know what it measured, but the lamps and stuff started shaking and I ran out of the house!

About 2 or 3 years ago there was another centered a few miles from my house. I was out of town at the time, so I don’t know what that was like and what it measured.

I saw a show a long time ago on PBS or something like that. It was really good, but scary. It was not a hype show, just about geology in the US.
