Michael Carrick

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

West Ham United have issued a firm hands-off warning to both Arsenal and Newcastle over 19 year old midfielder Michael Carrick. Despite that fact that the young England star has only just signed a contract extension at Upton Park, both Arsenal, looking for a long term replacement for Patrick Vieira, and Newcastle remain keen. Hammers managing director Paul Aldridge told The Mirror : "We are building a team, not taking one apart."

That was from Midarse .. the thing is I read in the Tynseide Herald and post that Carrick wants to come to Newcastle. He is back on Tnside visiting his family and in an Exclusive interview said "Although i'm very hapy at West Ham, I still dream of someday playing for Newcastle United."

Surely that's a come and get me plea?

Do we want him?

Can we afford him?

Can we afford not to buy him

I think Carrick is one of only a few British players of a high standard that might come our way at the minute! I'd love to see him in our team, but it just is not going to happen.

What with the savings on the academy plus our world class transfer fund and all our season tickets being sold, why couldn't we afford him?

Notice very carefully the choice of the word "someday".
What this almost certainly means is "...there is no way Jose I will entertain moving to NUFC as it could seriously retard my hughly promising career. However, when I'm 32, have a cuboard full of trophies/medals/caps, and am starting to think about life after football, the thought of a couple of twilght seasons playing for Toon will, all of a sudden, probably seem like a real nice idea".

Ain't gonna happen: forget it.

Well he certainly isn't going to win a cupboard full of trophies if he stays at West Ham. I thin that there's a distinct posibility of him making a switch to Newcastle in the next few weeks.

I think you're right Clarky, the 'someday' has to mean something like that cos if it was any shorter term, why has he signed an extension ?

And anyway, at the first hint of him wanting away, I think we'd be way down the pecking order, possibly not from his point of view, but I think certainly from WHam's. It would probably be a similar scenario to the Bellamy thing when he went to Coventry because we couldn't (wouldn't ?) compete.

Spot on PB - there'd be a list of 'interested parties' for Carrick as long as the list of players who have already rejected us, and we would drop out as soon as the bidding casually swept past £8mm, on its way to circa. £12mm.
There again, we shouldn't deny people the chance to dream..............

Wham have signed him up, if he progresses 15-7 mill next year i bet.

Are not any of these so-called stars interested in a challenge? It is not as though NUFC is a terminal case, as it almost was when KK took over. We not be as affluent as we were before robber baron Halls ran off with the funds generated from the success of the KK era, but we do have some cash, enormous support, a fine stadium, improving facilities and a better than average team. Carrick would do well to remember Shearer's comments -- I want to play for Newcastle when I am in my prime.

Aye, but at 19 he'll reach that prime in 5 years time.

Would rather have sooner than later though

If we don't at least TRY to get him, it will prove once and for all that the ambition has gone.

I don't disagree with that view SMB, but it doesn't change anything really. Believe me, we have tried to sign a large number of players over recent weeks, and other than Bellamy/Elliott - and hopefully one or two that we may be negotiating with right now - we have made approaches for, and been knocked back on, a number of players that would frighten you. I genuinely believe they are trying.

Swift,
Read my lead post on the "Toon Transfer Activity" thread.
Actually, there's nothing more I can say without compromising my source.

Deep Throat in action again, Clarky? :-)

gan on mate,

I hope Deepthroat turns out to be a real c***s***er Clarky but you appear to have a lot of faith in this person.

I just think that we have to have more of a chance of signing the likes of Carrick, Bridges and Jansen say, than we have of attracting top quality foreigners, even if we offer them ridiculous wages. For that reason, if it were up to me I'd go for the best young English talent first of all. Hopefully we are still regarded as a big club by the likes of the players I've mentioned and if we could get the likes of those, it would go a long way towards getting us into Europe. Then next season we start all over again to try to get the big name foreigners.
