Horse throws rider, wins ancient race

By Associated Press, 7/2/2001 15:21

SIENA, Italy (AP) Ugo Sancez won with his nose and without his jockey in a spectacular edition Monday of Siena's ancient Palio horserace.

The horse brushed against the rail on the outside of the track and lost his rider midway in the race. He kept going, and edged his way to the front ahead of two other horses at the finish line.

Under the Palio rules, a horse doesn't have to have a rider to win.

The Palio, which has been run since 1656, is a breakneck, bareback dash three times around Siena's main square. There is no prize purse; the race is run for the glory.

A fierce competition among Siena's neighborhoods, the Palio lasts just about a minute. Ugo Sancez represented the Leocorno neighborhood.

The race drew the usual packed crowd of thousands jamming Siena's main square, as well as politicians, TV stars and Miss Italy, Tania Zamparo.
