Leica CL series 5.5 Filter Adapter

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Just bought an 11251 filter adapter ring for my CL assuming it would hold 5.5 filters on to the lens just like the hood/adapters do. However, the back flange isn't deep enough to do that. How does this ring actually hold the filter in place - do I need some kind of retaining ring that fits into the front? Andrew Fildes

Are you sure about the catalog number 11251, Andrew? The Leica Collectors Guide shows #11251 is the 35mm Elmarit-R lens(?!).

Quite sure - the ring does not have Leitz on it but has CANADA 11251 on one side and 5.5 on the other. I understood that it was a discontinued accessory for the CL but why it would have CANADA on it beats me unless it's a third party item. I've seen it listed elsewhere as a Leitz accessory, in box. I was aware of the 35mm Elmarit number - another mystery. Ebay photographs I've seen of them aren't clear enough to show a retaining ring, although there is a recess in the front which may take one.

Is it a vented rigid hood? If so it may be like my 12504 hood for the pre-ASPH 35mm Summilux-M. That hood unscrews into 2 pieces, allowing me to drop in a series VII filter, then screw it back togethr for mounting.

I have one of those adaptors, it came with a rubber hood for my 90/2.8 T-E. The rear is a standard E39 male thread, the front has a smooth groove/rim about 1.5mm inside, and no threads at all. I don't have a clue as to what or how anything is retained inside it, other than by snap-fit (hardly likely with a glass filter) or glue. I don't use or need it, but I'm kind of curious as to how it "adapts" myself.

Looks strange to me. I have no idea, unless it's missing a snap-on front rim that holds the filter in place. Does not look like a Leitz/Leica item though - probably after-market.

Not a 39E thread Jay - technically a 39ES thread if such a thing was made by B+W, et al - that is a 0.75mm pitch rather than the standard 0.5mm. I got caught this way - bought a couple of 39mm filters that didn't fit. The 'C' lenses for the CL (40 and 90) have this coarser thread and it's amazing how many people aren't aware of that. (The Rokkor branded versions use a 40.5mm filter) I was hoping that it would allow me to use my small collection of 5.5 filters easier and faster that messing around with the wretched hood retainer. So far, the only other filters I've found that fit are Nikon 39mm filters for the rear carrier on big tele lenses. Even managed to find Schneider push-on caps to fit over them. Handy, but somehow it offends to put a Nikon filter on a Leitz!

The fact is: what you have (marked CANADA 11251 5.5) is just ONE PART OF an adaptor ring (2 pieces in all) which is intended to house a standard S5.5 filter. I happened to pick up one of this adaptor recently for US$8. It's nice but honestly not that useful.

Yes - that's what I was affeared of - bugger. The few I've seen offered only had the single ring. What does the second part look like? Want to sell yours, if you don't find it that useful :) I might glue a handy filter into it - FLD or yellow perhaps as they get indoor use usually. I suspect a 37mm might squeeze in.
