Try going from avi to asf. It's about 4 x the compression of mpeg. You will lose some quality in the picture tho. You asked about converting a 2 gig avi/mpeg...well which is it?...A 2 gig AVI can be compressed quite a bit by going to mpeg format...but if you're talking about a 2gig Mpeg...well that really is quite a big file :-)

If you do have the original AVI...try the asf compression and see if the results suit you or not. (sonic foundry make Stream Anywhere which will do the job, taking either avi OR mpeg to asf)

Use TMPGenc to convert *.avi to *.mpg this will give you the answer. The *.mpg can be used to create 02 VCD's using any CD burning package.

You want to get NANdub, it is the fully configurable mpeg 4 encoder, it was designed with the illegal DivX codec in mind, but now you can use the original mpeg 4 codec from microsoft so it you produce a perfectly legal format of avi file (providing you havn't copied something you don't own).

it will take a 2 hour video clip, encode it at resolutions up to 720x576 and fit it on a cd in near dvd quality.

The good thing is that the new microsoft x-box will play back microsoft mpeg4 avi files and its new asf/wmv files on a tv. With a little tweaking it would probally play DivX too.

DivX/Mpeg4 is in the works for PSX2 and it just goes to show that while microsoft did create mpeg4, there codecs and encoders were shit, and unpaid, unsung and unknown programmers working for free on opensource programs, have created one of the most powerful video encoders ever assembled able to fit 2+ hours of footage on a cd. At the moment you can only really play it on your computer, (pretty good if it's hooked up to your stereo), but SONY never said the PSX would play VCD's, it had to be modified to accomadate vcd's, the same way divx/mpeg 4 is going to work its way in as the MP3 of the DVD age.

You can find out all about and get all the programs to encode in this groudbreaking new technology at either of these fine sites

You may use some software like: AVI Constructor (any version). It includes an AVI compressor, that would alloud you to compress a given avi file into another, using certain CODECs. Now If you want to convert, I would suggest to use the XVID codec. It's fast, very good quality, near the INDEO codec, just I was able to convert an 2 gig avi file (no sound) into an 800MB avi file, same quality. So try it.
