Shingle Aging

Shingles start to age the day they are put on the roof. Initially some of the mineral granules come loose and the shingle may even curl or blister slightly. This is normal and the shingle soon settles into a long middle-age period. As shingles near the end of their lives, the deterioration accelerates. When there are more granules in the gutter than on the roof; when the shingles have large cracks; or when the shingles curl severely, it is time to start thinking about reroofing. If you wait for the roof to leak, the repairs may be very costly.
