Sight of Bobby at Wimbledon didn't cheer me up much...

Last time he was spotted taking in the tennis in SW18, he bought Carl Cort... Regarding the tennis, is it just me or is it crap this year? Wimbledon used to be the highlight of the close season..

Went on Friday. Queued for two hours, got in about 4.30, couldn't see nowt. They let us in to Court 1 to watch Raymond v Henin but after the first set we decided to go for a wander and realised we couldn't get in anywhere else. It's a massive piss-take, you wait, buy the ticket then there's no guarantee of being able to see anything.

The quality of the tennis in the few matches I've watched on telly has been terrific.
Last time I took any real notice of Wimbledon - say 3-4 years ago - every men's game was dominated by serve with virtually no rallies, making it incredibly boring.
There are still some heavy servers around, but they seem to have improved their ability to return even the heavier serves, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it so far.

Went on Friday. Queued for four hours. Got in at 10.50am. A £12 ground pass served up some fabulous tennis, including last set of Henman on Centre Court. Yes - as always - it's very busy and difficult to get near the courts with just a ground pass...but it is possible to see some really good games.

Think it's been a cracking tournament so far with lots more to come. And what about McEnroe on the BBC TV coverage? Let's hope Bobby was there to talk him into joining the coaching staff.

I've been on holiday but the games I've caught have been cracking, far better stroke play by all. The last time I went, there was still standing available on the show courts & if the weather is kind, the cost of the tickets was the best value day out you could hope for.

Best bit of viewing I saw was on one of the first days when the camera landed on Cliff Richard and the commentator said (meaning because the weather was so great) "I don't think we're going to be hearing his singing today, thank God". McEnroe pounced "Oh I don't think he sings that bad". Other commentator, flustered, "No I meant I don't think it'll rain". McEnroe : "That's not what I'm going to go and tell Cliff you said"

Bob was sitting beside Alex Ferguson. Do you think there's truth in the rumour about making a bid for Nicky Butt?

Yeh, I should have added how superb John MacEnroe is in the commentary box - he's certainly blown away all the Dan Maskellesque cobwebs, and has an wonderful ability to bring the game to the masses. Top blerk.

1, tom maskell is a pain in the bum 2, i think it probably gives more credence to the Dyer to man u rumour :-(

There's an excellent interview with McEnroe in the current issue of Radio Times, which I hope a few Premiership players read:

For example:

"I know as a player you think the whole world revolves around the circuit, and then you wake up to discover you're clueless about life. I was more aware than most, but I had some growing up to do - and still do. I tell them, 'Enjoy the moment,' because who knows if you'll ever have it again. I wish I'd done that more."

And: "There's so much money you'd think there'd be less tension, but it's created more. Money does ugly things."

Over the last week, I've been able to take in a lot of Mr Mc commenting from Wimbledon, and I can't believe he's the same bloke I hated loathed and detested and wished he would vanish without trace when he was playing.

Talk about a pussy cat. I am now a complete McEnroe fan. He's interesting, witty, and even seems telepathically knowledgeable about what's going on on court. The man's a star, and coming from me, that's praise indeed.

So it's never too late. There might even be hope for me yet. On second thoughts though ... :-))

Actually, I think it's been quite good this year. Sampras is always a complete turn-off, but the Brits are doing well and the ladies tennis is...ahem...rivetting as usual.

Classic on Saturday from him. "Hewitt just has to be patient. Did those words actually come out of MY mouth?"

-- Anonymous, July 02, 2001

McEnroe was a classic. He brought the game to life after the stiffling yawn-meister Borg. Resistance was indeed futile. During a recent Henman vs no-mark, he began commenting about William Vague's resignation. Canny lad.

And I hope you went to the right part of Wimbledon, Dougs...it's SW19 ;-P OK, I'll f**k off then...
