Uplifting sport

Just watched the Lions in the most uplifting sporting event I've seen in ages.

It's always going to be physical, that's the nature of it, but this had all of that up front and then unbelievable skill and pace from the backs. To see the Jason Robinson skip away like that, then to see Henderson and O'Driscoll power and pace, and James on the wing, absolutely fantastic stuff.

There was the expected post match comments that this was only the first game, there were two more to be battled but what there was hardly any comment on was the fact that Wilkinson missed three kicks that any other day would have gone over (he bounced one off the top of the post !) and that would have been another 8 points.

For me pace is all important the higher you go in sport, NUFC suffered last year when Dyer wasn't there, we need to invest in pace, and maybe I'll get back to feeling that pride in Newcastle performances !

Fantastic result. I seem to recall that one of the bbs-ers was actually going to the game - Sting I think.
I hope we get an eye- witness report from him.
I know Jason Robinson was formerly a League player, but who does he now play for? Is he Welsh or English?

Robinson only started playing Union for Sale in December, so should start performing well later this year when he's sussed out what to do

I agree with your comments macbeth - I watched it from a pub in sydney and the atmosphere was great. The game in sydney is in two weeks and I'll be there - lets hope for a repeat performance, its good to shut the aussies up! Strangely enough, the match has hardly had a mention on the news since, unlike the one day cricket.

Sting should have been there with his brother, Stung. He flew over for the match so young Sting was intending on joining him in sunny Brisbane.

I think Nige was going to make an appearance. I think Tre was sleeping or working this weekend. Its hard to tell with him.

remember hearing Ken Dodd on the radio discussing sport. he admitted to knowing nothing about anything but football, this was a day the Lions were playing in South Africa. when they came back to the studion after a match report he continued with "you know the rugby team Wasps, well do they have a b team?" nearly drove off the road giggling

Sting and Tynedale went to the game. They had a great time. They stayed in a swanky hotel and hobnobbed with the lions. Wor Jonny is quite shy they reckon. Lucky sods. Sting came back sporting a fetching red lions cap. Tynedale was sporting a new hold-all because all the handles snapped on him old one.
Ah, life in Oz.

Wan't there widespread critsism of fans cheering when Newcastle won the Rugby FA cup thingy? I'm glad Britain won but at the end of the day, it's only the 3rd sport behind Rugger League as far as team club sport goes generally played by people who weren't good enought to play football.

Nah Dave, it's moved on.

I went to a rugby university and you're right the rugby players, trained hard but drank harder and really, despite the level they were in their sport, they weren't the top athletes at the place. This has changed.

The cross dressing between League and Union has brought Union up a grade. Also the Lions v Australia really is the top you can get in this sport.
