Nuclear Waste Shipment Sneaks Through Missouri

Convoy moved through Metro Area Wednesday evening

A shipment of radioactive waste from Germany has passed through St. Louis without incident.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the shipment of three trucks entered Missouri on Interstate 270 at 7:01 Wednesday night. The trucks then headed west on I-70.

The trucks stopped for 90 minutes at the Foristell weigh station on I-70. Police say the inspection didn't find anything wrong with the trucks.

The load of reactor fuel from Europe is the first in a decade of nuclear waste shipments expected to cross the nation's heartland.

State officials have been worried about the safety of a shipment on I-70. They argued for several years that the waste should take a different cross-country route.
