MEXICO CITY - Dozens of officers of two different police organizations battled at each other with guns Thursday in downtown Mexico City, Public Security spokesmen told EFE.

The fight started when Judicial Police officers went to a Mexico City Preventive Police station with a warrant for the arrest of one of the officers.

The fellow officers of the wanted man prevented Judicial Police from arresting him, precipitating a fistfight which escalated into a gunfight.

Public Security officers were forced to block traffic off during the 20-minute battle while radio stations alerted drivers to keep out of the area and take alternate routes to avoid being endangered by the gunfire.

After the fight, in which nobody was injured, police officers from the two departments began heated negotiations for the surrender of the wanted man, the spokesmen said.

It was not clear whether or not the man was eventually turned over to the Judicial Police.

Clashes among police officers of different departments are not new in the Mexican capital.
