GPU customers hit with outage Mercury Staff Report June 28, 2001

POTTSTOWN -- More than 4,200 GPU customers in the Pottstown and Boyertown areas were without electricity Wednesday night after the company's Ringing Rocks substation shut down, according to GPU officials. The outage happened at 5:45 p.m. Work crews were on the scene immediately, but were unable to determine the cause of the outage.

Company officials said an equipment failure was to blame, but added that the matter was still under investigation because the cause of the failure was undetermined.

All customers were back on the grid by 7:28 p.m., company officials said.

At the same time, GPU was shuffling crews to Reading and New Jersey to deal with outages in those areas.

Customers in the Reading area were out for about 10 minutes due to a "temporary trip."

More than 15,000 customers were without power in Ocean and Monmouth counties at the shore in New Jersey for about 30 minutes, due to an equipment failure there, officials said.
