Can these people continue with their normal occupations or do they have to devote themselves to refereeing full-time? It's quite a nice little earner if they can continue to work as well!

I believe there to be full-time. David Ellery has declined to join their ranks as he wishes to keep his job.

Hmmm - Elleray is on the BBC's version of the list Clarky.
  • G Barber (Hertfordshire)
  • N Barry (Lincolnshire)
  • S Bennett (Kent)
  • M Dean (Wirral)
  • P Dowd (Staffordshire)
  • S Dunn (Avon)
  • P Durkin (Avon)
  • Andy D'Urso (Essex)
  • D Elleray (Middlesex)
  • C Foy (Merseyside)
  • D Gallagher (Oxfordshire)
  • M Halsey (Lancashire)
  • P Jones (Leicestershire)
  • B Knight (Kent)
  • M Messias (North Yorkshire)
  • G Poll (Hertfordshire)
  • D Pugh (Merseyside)
  • U Rennie (South Yorkshire)
  • M Riley (Yorkshire)
  • R Styles (Hampshire)
  • A Wiley (Staffordshire)
  • C Wilkes (Gloucestershire)

  • E Wolstenholme (Lancashire)

If these guys continue with their day jobs then I can't see how this is going to improve things.

  • Looks like all the "usual suspects" to me.

I reckon we should consider getting a few 'johnnies' like Colina in to see how they perform in the PL. Once they've gone pro there's no reason why a little cross-fertilisation couldn't be undertaken to improve refereeing consistency across the EU.

How in the world did Jeff Winter make it onto the list? If they're hiring anyone that asks, where can I apply? My qualifications are that I nearly always miss hand balls, tend to think 99% of the calls should go in NUFC's favour, and would bring to the job the willingness to red card most of the Mackems...just because, and call penalties against ManU at OT...or anywhere else if they deserve it or perhaps if they don't it really depends on how I feel that day. My strengths are arbitrariness(sp?) and contrariness. ;-)))

We have received a high standard of applicants for this post and regretfully inform you that we are returning your application. We wish you well in your future a different career.

Good f**king grief...Urine Runnie a PL ref. Useless heap of dung.

Uriah Rennie - excellent ref in the Nationwide: utter buffoon in the PL. Why? Could it be all the cr@p they fill the referees heads with in the PL, whereas in the Nationwide they let them get on and referee with common sense? Could it be that the players attitudes towards the referees is markedly different in the Nationwide?
Damned if I know, but there does seem to be a big difference.

They also get attacked by Joe Public weilding a camera tripod in the Nationwide: something I'm often goaded into trying.

I remember UR in the Villa game, the first game of the season, the season before last. UR was the only ref with a feckin agent at the time. Remember him sending Shearer off, I think that was the worst reffing I've ever seen.
I'm sure, dead sure the twat started that game (that season) wanting back page headlines. He doesn't have the right to impose himself on a game to satisfy his own agenda like that.
He should have been sacked, charged and sent to gaol.

Clarky, the referees can work full time as a referee and keep their old jobs apparently.

Begs the question of why turn them professional if the only difference is an increased pay packet? At the end of the day it's the same referees with the same brains and same fitness levels.

With all the technology used at Wimbledon to make the line judges' job easier, surely some similar stuff could be used for football?

If that's true Paul, then I don't understand the concept of the professional referee at all.
